sources of ceramic glass Platen?

USA knifemakers supply seems to be out of everything except the 15 inch ones. I don't have a way of cutting into 2 pieces and even if I did would probably end up breaking it.
So does anyone know of any other sources?
Thanks.

Crack the yellow pages in the phone book under "glass" and pick a local one.

You are looking for "pyroceram"

fireplace glass, or oven door glass.

Order the size you need, they will cut to whatever sizes you need.

Get a few at a time so their minimum charge is spread over a few pieces.

I last bought three pieces, 2x6" came to $20 for all three.

I think the key is finding someone who does it everyday and has it in stock.

Sam, can you tell us where you got your three pieces at for 20 bucks?

I did mention above how you can find that sort of thing.

I did not buy it a a knife supply website.
You can almost always find their suppliers if you do a little looking.

I cracked the yellow pages of the actual paper phone book under the heading "Glass".

I called every one of the local glass dealer / repair shops that are local to me (about 15)

I told them what I wanted and asked for a price.

I went there and bought it in person.

We pay too much for everything in Canada so I'm sure you can find a better deal.

I paid cash and they charged me no sales tax, so I'm not going to mention their name here.
Plus, you're in Texas and I'm in Canada, they don't do shipped orders and that info won't help you.

Buying it in person allowed me to take it home and break it at my own leisure instead of having it smashed in shipping

You can buy damn near anything off the internet, but there are real stores out there too.

IIRC, I got my last platen from hightemptools.com.

USAknifemaker was out of them at the time.

Seems like that's becoming a little bit more of the norm for common items like that. Not sure if they have a min/max system set up for their inventories, but I've had to shop elsewhere numerous times because they've been out of stock for multiple items that I've needed.

Kind of a shame.

I did talk to the local glass company about getting a piece pyroceramic glass. They told me it would be at least $80 for a 2x6, I told them I would get it online for less than 1/4 the price.

I bought mine from High Temperature Tools & Refractory. Reasonable, and shipped in a timely manner.

Generally I avoid the fleabay for anything knife related if I can, but sometimes a deal is too good to pass up... I bought a piece from an ebay seller (I have no relation to this seller etc...) He/she sells pyroceram priced in 2" square sizes for $1.05 shipped. So, for example a 6"x2" flat platen like mine was $6.30 I think shipped. Arrived quickly with nice clean cuts right at the dimensions I specified. Basically the same stuff as HTT but if you aren't buying anything else from HTT the shipping will kill ya.

Just search for 'pyroceram' and filter for lowest price first. Should be the first listing... Arrived in about 3 days I think.

Eric, thanks for posting that information. I try to shop locally but you can't find the stuff around here at a decent price. Curtis

I hate to resurrect a 2 year old thread, but I have to second Eric's recommendation. I found the store he mentioned on eBay, and I was pleasantly surprised by the price. I ended up getting three 2"x8" platen liners for less than $30 shipped. Seller communication was great, shipping was super fast, and everything was packed very well. I got my liners about 3 days after ordering, and everything looks great. Cuts are square and very clean, dimensions are spot on, and I have absolutely zero complaints.

Highly recommend!

(and no, I'm not affiliated with the seller in any way either)

The glass top stoves you see are made of a ceramic glass. I picked one up from the side of the road and even though I broke the glass removing it, I still yielded 14- 2 x9 pieces. The material cuts with a standard glass cutter. If you find one, they are bonded to the metal with silicone. Take a propane torch and heat the glass where it is bonded and the silicone will let go. I have heated a piece of this stuff to a nice cherry red and gone straight into a bucket of water...it seemed to be unfazed by heat. I'm on the lookout for another to cut into larger pieces to surface the platen of a large belt sander .

Wow, I'm so glad I stumbled across this thread. I've been buying it as a plate and having it cut locally after I could no longer get it at Usa knifemaker, but the ebay store is so much cheaper. Just ordered a couple 2x9 pieces! Thanks guys:thumbup:
