I will be in South Africa for a month this summer and I want to know a couple of things: where are the good knife shops and give me an idea about carry laws. I will be in some major cities like Cape Town, Durban, and Johannesburg.

Anthony, you might want to call Chris Reeves. He moved here from So Africa a few years ago and likely can tell you what you want to know.

Try emailing Aubrey, too; he lives in South Africa and will have current information. A search will turn up some of his posts and that'll give you his email address.

Have a great trip! Take care! Michael

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

Anthony, I think you'll enjoy meeting those South African knifemakers. I met Des Horn at the last ECCKS and like all the other SA makers I've met a heck of a nice guy (a little out of my price range thou

) I bought a knife from Lourens Prinsloo at the NY Custom show kast Nov. a very classy knife and a class guy. Des tells me that he lives in Northern South Africa in the Transvaal. I believe that Des lives in the south. That's just one thing to consider South Africa is not that small, you may have a lot of distance to cover! Have a good trip.

One other thing you might try -- ask Spyderco who distributes/carries their Matriarchs in South Africa. As you know, the knife was designed for the SA market specifically, and anyone down there who's carrying it is probably *something* at least.

"Sharp Edge" in Sandton City, at Sandton, Gauteng is a must visit shop.A related outlet in Duban is located in "The Wheel" Mall in the city centre.
RAMROD import many products, including Spyderco, and are the source for the Matriarch. They are based at Kya Sand.
Every gunshop tends to have a range of knives.
Have a great trip

Anthony - South Africa has provided some of the most pleasant memories for my wife, Gail & I. It is a beautiful part of the world.

It is a world in many transitions. The people are very forward thinking, and they also have many challenges. Which they accept and strive to overcome. Be sure to visit Cape Point, where the mighty oceans kiss. Make it a great trip.
