South African Knife Makers Guild Show (Large pics)

Nice one Boet!
As usual, something for everyone.
I miss the vibrant outdoors community back in SA.

Thanks for the photo report.
Always good to see the SA guys' work.
And it seems that attendance, and sales, were up on last year which is great news!

As for the racial make-up of show visitors . . . hmmm . . . kinda out of anyone's hands. Not too many Native Americans attend the Canadian Shows, or Turks visit the Solingen Show. There's plenty of money in SA's black community, we've got the highest growth rate of black millionaires and billionaires in the world, but their spending patterns lie elsewhere. Now if this was a BMW show, or a mobile phone expo, then the colour scheme would look very different! :)

Thanks for taking the time to post this for us. Got to see a couple of familiar faces and knives (canes too) ;).

Those are chris reeve one piece knives. I have a shadow IV and like it alot. His webpage is www.chrisreeve.com

Jip. That is true, but these were made out of D2 steel by another knife maker that gives credit to Chris Reeve for the design. I just cannot remember his name!

Bertie Rietveld was there, but I waited almost 30 minutes to see his knives and his damascus as it was a big attraction and sell point.

For me the knives I was interested in was user knives using g10 and micarta etc, those knives are a bit harder to find as there are a lot of art knives and just aw experiencing craftsmanship (unfortunately very expensive but I will buy those in future one day)

I have always wanted a Burger cane stick. They are a little steep for my wallet. Glad you could get there and enjoy the occasion. I hope you managed a few business cards.

I was very fortunate to get there this year and thank goodness it fell in my vacation break from varsity. Wish I could afford everything I wanted there and then!

I really like Fred Burger's stuff. I picked up a small Excaliber here on the forum last year. His work is top notch.

His work is great! He is a humble person and loves to talk about knives! I always get stuck at his and his families work! The EXK1 is a great edc knife! He was so glad to see mine and all the scratches that it has. He loves seeing his knives being used.

By any chance did notice if Theuns Prinsloo is still making fixed blade skinners?

Yes there were some but it was sold the previous evening for the invited collectors and guild members. I am sure if you contact him he would help you out.

Hi Everyone

I picked up one of the hollow-handle knives at the show. They are made by a fellow called Derek Rausch. I have the Chris Reeves Jereboam (Mark VI) and the small Mountaineer, so I was able to do a comparison.

The Derek Rausch knives are fantastic: D2 at around 58 Rc (according to Derek) and with a fit and finish that is close to that of Chris Reeves. One of the things I really like about Reeves's knives is the absolute symmetry of the grinds on all areas of his knives. Derek's knives are definitely comparable in that regard.

I took the Rausch knife out on a hike in the Parys area a day after I bought it, but didn't really get a chance to do anything more severe than slice salami and whittle some wood with it.:o

The one personal observation I would make is that although the blade is hollow ground and makes for a fine field/camp knife, it sports a straight drop point and long grind back on the spine that gives the knife a bit of a 'combat' feel (which isn't my 'cup of tea'). I have since spoken to Derek to see if he can make me another knife with a deeper blade but with less or no grind on the spine, and he said that he would be happy to do so.

Regards
Dirk

Dereck Rausch, I must look through my collection of business cards. I recall first seeing the Chris Reeves knives at the Durban Easter show some 20 years back a friend dragged me to.

Hi Tim

If you don't have Derek's details, I'll post them for you. I don't have his business card on me now though (it's at the office). Let me know.

Cheers
Dirk

It would be easier than looking through my kit thanks. He is an excellent cutler.

Where about are you in J'burg? I used to commute to our Sandton (behind Audi centre) office for a couple of weeks a month and reside in the Office flat in Morningside.

Dirk

Thank you for the reply. I just could not remember the cutler. I knew it was something with an R but that does not help much. My girlfriend has all the business cards in her purse. So I have not gone looking for them yet. Do please keep us updated on how the knife treats you.

ps. What time were you there? would have been great to meet a fellow forum member there.

Hi Marthinus and Tim

Tim - I got your e-mail but can't seem to e-mail out :grumpy:. Please bear with me, I think the problem is with my ISP.

I live in JHB, in Bryanston, and went to the Knifemaker's Guild faire on Friday during the special guest period. I am a real fan of Kevin Harvey's knives (especially his field knives, of which I have acquired 4 over the years) and I own one of Peter Mason's damascus hunters. But I was immediately drawn to Derek's exhibit because of the similarity of his knives to those of Chris Reeves. And when he said the knives were ground from D2, I couldn't contain myself and bought one :). What could I do, eh? :o

Cheers
Dirk
