South Fork Campout

Last night I took my young scouts on a campout at South Fork, which is located at the very southwestern corner of Sequoia NP. It is at low elevation, and since it is also at the bottom of the canyon along the south fork Kaweah River, it has a mix of foothill and middle elevation vegetation. Here are a couple pictures of the general area:

This morning we went on a hike to Ladybug, which is so named for obvious reasons:

Just above Ladybug we could see a lone outlier of a grove of sequoias that extends several thousand feet up the canyon side, and is home to the fourth largest tree in the world (Floyd-Otter tree)

We went to a nice pool on the south fork Kaweah, this would be a great place for a swim in the summer

We could see Homer's Nose, which is on my list but I haven't had the chance to climb it yet

As we crossed a small creek, I liked the look of these alders with an incense cedar

I picked up a bunch of seeds, see how many you can identify without looking at the answers at the bottom

Sorry, no pics of the scouts - I don't post pictures of other people's kids on public forums.

Seeds, clockwise starting from lower left: Manzanita (edible, although mealy and tasteless, but supposedly make a great cider), California Black Oak, California Buckeye, Canyon Live Oak, California Torreya, Bigleaf Maple.

The torreya is an unusual tree. It has soft seeds, but it has needles. The needles are flat like fir, but sharp pointed like spruce. And for those of you who like the california buckeye burl that is seen on some knives, buckeye is a very common species in the foothills here.
