I've owned three Southards, one standard and one black. Then I bought a new black and put it away, as I love it, but don't carry it presently. I carry a Southard AVO for the last 18 months.
Positron instead?
Sounds like a good option, never had one. If there is a store where you can actually try them before you buy them that would be your best bet.
Maybe other guys with experience with the Positron can pitch in; I'm sure they will have only good things to say about it, it might be smaller than the Southard but I'm not sure.
How much are you looking to spend?
Thanks for the reply. It's definitely smaller than the Southard but still packs a 3 inch blade. I unfortunately have nothing around me (not even in my state as far as I know) to try anything out.
My budget tops out right at 160 but I'm hoping to find something on the exchange to get a little more bang for my buck!
I got you, do you have any PM2's?
Thanks for the help and advice everyone. I snagged one today!

Thanks guys! I went with an all black. It's my first blacked out spydie and my second one from the Taichung factory. I'm hoping that it's as impressive as my slysz Bowie. I'll throw up some pics when I get it!
Alright! After some PayPal issues on my end and then three days of painfully waiting for usps to swing by, I have my Southard! Yahoo!
First impressions:
I love pretty much everything. I was really worried about the flipping action but man...this thing is a dream. Maybe it comes from it being used and therefore broken in, but it flips beautifully no matter which technique I use.
What's more, I can open this with a flick of my thumbnail or the pad of my thumb. And I can open it normally like I would a non flipper with zero issues and very little effort. The combination of great flipping action and something that I can open like normal is pretty stunning in my opinion.
My only gripes:
At first I thought my centering was off but I think, now, that the lockbar just looks slightly closer to the blade when the detent ball is in the detent hole.
The pocket clip, as has been said many times, is meh. I'll probably replace it.
I'm also having to be conscious of where I put my fingers with closing it as those lock bar cutouts are really sharp!
Overall, this is a welcome addition to my small but beloved Spyderco collection. It's my only all black knife and my only flipper. Here are some pics!
Thanks for the advice everyone!

That is a really nice looking knife! Congratulations, I'm glad you like it; I need to find out if the black coating on the handle is also DLC, that would be awesome. BTW, you have a nice collection of Spydercos there man, I like all your choices, I need to get a Szylz bowie one day (I hope I spelled that correctly); and the Dragonfly with G10 handles is one of my faves.
Did you sell your Native 5?
