Does anyone else with big hands wish the handle on the Southard wish the handle was a little longer(.25-.33) at least ?

I have big hands. The handle isn't long enough for my hand. I really like this knife lot, I wish Brad had made the handle a little longer tho.

Before I bought my Southard I started a thread asking if the handle on the Southard was long enough for big hands. A few guys said yes.

The handle is only .100 longer than the tip of the blade. .125 is 1/8 of an inch.

I don't have enough room on the bottom on PM2 handle and could use more on the top of the handle.

Comments from guys with big hands...........

I have average sized hands for a man and it's perfect for me, I could see where someone with really large hands would feel like it was inadequate

Try a Military.

I have 2 Millies.

I like my Southard a lot too.

I posted a thread asking if the handle on the southard was big enough for a big hand. A few guys said the handle was long/big enough for big hands.

I guess the guys that said the handle was long enough for big hands Didn't Have big hands.:D:rolleyes:

You can get Brad Southard to build a custom for you with a more ideal size. The Southard mirrors plenty of his flippers.

You can also add a coiled noose style lanyard you can use as an "extention" to the handle.

If a Military turns out to be too small, I've got a blue ox named Babe to sell you, clockman. ;)

I'm a slow learner. Rather than grab a ruler and figure out exactly how long a handle needs to be for comfort in my medium-sized hands, I bought a bunch of folders that I eventually ended up selling including an E6 and a Small Sebenza. Now that I know a folder handle has to be no less than 4" to fit me comfortably, I'm a very happy camper.

I wish it was a tad longer but for a different reason. My hands are small, and when the knife is closed, the blade comes very close to the end of the handle. I have cut my finger on the end of the blade a few times while reaching into my pocket for the knife.
So unfortunately, this knife does not work for me.
I have never heard of this happening to anyone else, so I'm sure I can get it traded off fairly easily. Shame really because it is a nice knife.
Cheers

You're not the first person to say that. I looked at my Southard and the blade tip was far enough back from the end of the handle to provide adequate safety for me. Was the tip fully contained within the handle when you cut yourself on it?

Yes it was fully closed on all occasions. I had looked at it closer, and put my finger against the end of the handle just to make sue, and it only took a slight amount of pressure and I was touching blade. Needless to say, I checked every other knife I have and found nothing even close.
Cheers

I was concerned about this, as the tip does seem pretty close the end of the knife when closed, but I've been carrying my Southard continuously and have yet to have any issues with it.

Indeed, like I said, I have not heard much about this at all. Just one of those things I suppose.
Like clockman's original post, it makes the point that the handle is too small for his hands, not every knife is for everyone.
Cheers

I see... so this is just a vent thread. Thats cool, we all need to vent at times.

And don't believe every answer you get on the interwebz:p

I'm 6'5" and it fits me perfectly. Then again my mom always told me I had piano players hands, that is to say long fingers fairly bony.

Sorry it's not working for you. :(

I know what you're saying, when holding the knife my pinky finger is right on the edge of hanging off.

Same here. 6'3", size 13 shoe, large size glove. Piano player fingers, haha. I find the Southard handle to be perfect. Nothing left after the pinky finger, but that's the way I like it. If you need extra real estate, the Military is a better suit.

I agree, the Southard would be amazing with another .25"-.35" of handle. I'm still rocking the Para 2!

The biggest problem I had with the southard was the handle shape...kinda a bend to it and it just didnt feel right in my hand.I have a manix 2 and para 2 and I think there way more confortable.Other than that I really liked the flipper action of the knife.

There is no knife that will be the best fit for everyone that's for sure. The 560 is "too big", the Southard is "too small". I got medium hands... Call me content with both ;) I know it doesn't help but to add to my first post, Southard's customs are very similar to the Southard and I've seen plenty that are larger than the Southard. Of course, it doesn't help that the price is two to four times the price, but if you like the design that much, it is an option...
