I've been looking to get a quality Tanto to replace my CRKT M14-SFG beater. I've been milling around over an Emerson CQC7 for a good while now but I've been hearing so much about how you can really hit or miss with an Emerson(fit/finish, blade lockup) especially on a thread on the 1st page speaking about it here. I have heard great things about Southern Grind and the Bad Monkey so I went to their site and just wow! They have a carbon fiber Bad Monkey Tanto with the Emerson Wave and it just looks all sorts o Bad Assery! I am not familiar with the steel at all though, it says it is 14C-28N. Can anyone clue me up on what type of steel this is?

Thanks!

Its a Sandvik steel, made in Sweden I believe. They make steel for lots of knives; Mora, Kershaw, Southern Grind, just to name a few. It is not a "super" steel, but by all accounts its a good mid-grade (maybe better) knife steel that holds a decent edge, and is corrosion resistant.

I have owned two Bad Monkeys and both were EXCELLENT knives. Neither was the tanto version though.

The steel is a good steel. We don't know if they are doing anything else special to it with their heat treat but it holds an amazing edge and is not hard to get razor sharp. We sell a lot of Bad Monkeys and are yet to hear a complaint!

I've got one ordered, pretty excited about it. If Whitty stocked the pink, I'd have had it for days by now. If you're thinking carbon fiber, you might check out the one with anodized liners Whitty has in stock. He ships real fast, you could have it in a few days and give me a review while I'm waiting for mine to ship u(oo)ps ground to the west coast from Georgia. Hoping to have it by football season.

Mmmmmbuddayyyy I done had seen a Tanto with purple (my fav color) anodized liners on Witty's shop this afternoon. The one son

Thank you guys! If you ever buy a Bad Monkey from us and want the liners anodized, we are happy to do it free of charge. We can anodize them bronze, purple, blue or a light purple/pink. You can put a note in special instructions at check out or just shoot me an email to scott@usamadeblade.com

We obviously can not anodize the black blades with black liners.

For not being a super steel I find it performs damn well. Holds an edge just as long/well as 154cm, while easy to resharpen as well. Nailed the heat treat on this one. Try it you'll like it.

Carrying mine today. Love the Bad Monkey! I have two of them and was going to get with Whitty on getting a G10 version but then I heard about the Spider Monkey and had to pick one up at Blade. The OD green G10 version is still on my list to get. IMO they do a great job with the blade steel and I have met some of the employees as well as dealt with their customer service and they have went above and beyond.

For ordering I don't think you can go wrong with Whitty. I haven't purchased anything directly so far but from conversation I wouldn't hesitate to recommend usamadeblade.com to anybody and I look forward to doing business with them in the future.

With the advent of the Spider Monkey, and its use of S35VN, I doubt it will be long before SG switch the Bad Monkey to this steel as well. I have the Spider Monkey myself, and its a great blade. I've had it a week and it hasn't left my pocket.

Haha, I could have done without seeing the green/black! :p

I think the green/satin would look great with bronzed liners.

I have the Spider Monkey and it fits my needs very well, I had the Bad Monkey in Ghost Jade, just too big for EDC. I think I would like another Spider in Ghost Jade.

I have both knives and have to say that the Bad Monkey holds an edge just as well as any of my S30V Benchmades. Talking to the guys at Southern Grind they said that they would put their heat treat up against many premium steels from big name companies; I did not believe them at first but after a year of use I would have to agree. I beat up my Bad Monkey Tanto pretty good; pry open things and cut lots of cardboard, and it has held up remarkably well. While I normally HATE tanto blades, I carry this as my daily work knife.

Probably have to give them a call and see what they can do for you. As far as I am aware I don't think that is a configuration they normally sell/make.

How do I get a drop point with coated blade, FDE scales and a wave? That's what I want...

Unfortunately the only way to get the true wave is with the original carbon fiber scales. The G10 models don't have the true wave; that being said you can still easily deploy the knife from your pocket as it has enough grab. I open my spider monkey all the time by snagging the lip on my pocket and it has the same blade design.

HotRodColt,

You may still be able to special order it that way. I wanted a combo that they didn't normally produce and they made it for me with no problems. Like you, I wanted the G10 and "wave" and they did it. I even had them drill/tap it for lefty carry while they were at it. Give them a call they have excellent customer service.
