Southern grind vs Emerson. Which is the better decision?

I’ve owned both. Lock stick was really bad on the Emerson. I did really like the Spider Monkey. No issues with anything and the short clip was nice.

I love my Emersons but Southern Grind builds a superior knife and it ain't even close, imo. Far better fit and finish with greater consistency, more value-for-dollar in terms of materials, more refined overall, and stellar customer service.

My Emersons have a very distinct, very tactile, feel to them that makes them unique in my collection/hoard, but not everyone will appreciate the flavour--kind of like black licorice.

'Better' is entirely subjective. If you try both, OP, come on back and tell us which *you* prefer and why. Good luck!:thumbsup:

I only have one Emerson, and I'm really only holding onto it for sentimental reasons, it hardly ever gets carried. I have 4 Southern grind knives, and one Case that was made by Southern Grind, all of which get carried and used regularly. I'm also actively looking at buying more Southern Grind knives, but completely ignoring Emerson at this point. IMHO, Emersons are terrible slicers, which is the whole point of a knife. Sure they're "durable" because of that cutting geometry, but it's kinda missing the point of a knife if it's not a good cutter.

All due respect, carrying a knife and thinking you can go to a favela in Rio at night would be foolish. Gangs in urban areas carry guns. Best to avoid dangerous areas. The Emerson Commander cant stop bullets.
Like Heck !

I bet you could take a bunch of Cold Steel XL Espadas , fit them into ballistic plate carrier like pockets and achieve some "bullet resistance" at least !

Also, guns don't exactly "stop bullets" either .

Agreed , it's best to just avoid getting shot at .

Prior to 9-11 , I would have been carrying "heat" on vacation or otherwise . With few exceptions .

Now , simpler to just stay home . :)
