I am now the owner of a copper scaled southern grind spider monkey, but it has lock stick.

When opening with the thumb stud it will stick, but break free. If you use the thumb stud and any wrist action it worsens to a large degree. I do not feel this will wear in based on how it is seating itself upon lockup.

Also the detent ball is gritty when rolling on the blade.

Looking over the warranty it states shipping is on the owner dime to send in the knife and also a charge of $12 return shipping.

Is this true even if the knife is a defect in manufacturing? I tried to search, but could not find much. I believe I have read before that southern grind has a decent warranty reputation.

Love the knife, but lock stick is not tolerable in my eyes.

Have you thought about asking Southern Grind? Try E-mailing or calling them.

I'd give them a call Monday and see what they say. I've had nothing but positive experiences with the folks at Southern Grind.

Call Southern Grind customer service!

I purchased a copper spider monkey and the blade centering and action was horrible. The pivot was gritty and full of gunk. In an attempt to adjust the blade position and clean up the tight, sticky action, I messed up the proprietary handle screws. I fixed the action, but the centering was still off some. I called Southern Grind CS to see if I could buy replacement screws and they decided to send me a new knife right away instead. They never even asked for proof of purchase. When I received the absolutely perfect replacement knife, I sent the bad knife back to them with the prepaid return label emailed to me. Didn't cost me a thing.

A couple of days after receiving the replacement, the CS person called me to see if the new knife was acceptable.

My copper spider monkey has no lock stick. The action is silky smooth and has almost a hydraulic feel, much like a Sebenza.

Outstanding customer service!

Augustus thank you for the info.

I know I can call them, I was just wondering what I was up against in getting it fixed or if these truly wear in somehow. The stonewashed blade on the copper scale is sold out so a replacement from the vendor is not feasible.

Thanks to all for the prompt responses.

My pleasure!
Southern Grind was extremely accommodating. My copper spider monkey has the stonewashed blade. They had a few knives on hand when I called them back in February. I'm pretty sure they'll take care of you.
