Southern michigan hiking/off trail camping?

Rupestris is referring to the phenomenon that takes place in Michigan every deer season. The population of the UP must double when the trolls, (what us UP residents call people that live below the bridge), come up here and have a good time. Some even hunt. Then, us Yoopers, (the long way of spelling UP,) and the trolls, poke fun at each other. Both sides of the bridge look forward to the friendly banter each year. In fact, I think hunting in the UP is the main reason the bridge was built.

Dont forget to pick up yer Yoopers CD's when yer on the upside eh?

Porcupine Mountain State Park is great. I will let you in on a secret. There is a WWII B17 bomber crash site on the side of the mountain. And NO I will not tell you where. If you want it bad enough you will find it. Do not bother asking the park rangers because they don't want people going up there. If you do find it please respect what this crash represents and do not take anything from the site. Not only is it illegal because this site is state property but it would just be bad karma.

Going up to the UP is like going back in time. My mom is from a small town that was moved because they dug an open pit mine in its place. Park City became Republic MI. One post office, one small convenience store and several bars.

I spent many summers and winters up there hiking, fishing, swimming in the river. Great memories. :)
