Just got myself an SP 10 Marine Raider. I have wanted on for a while and the most negative comment I could find was about the sheath. Well, the sheath is great, No probs at all. But the problem I have is with the grind onto the swedge, it's about 4mm different from one side to the other. One side actually comes exactly to the point, but the other....well. I know I could contact the seller and get another one, but I would be paying for the postage. It doesn't affect the knife at all, great in the hand. But I have been reading this similar issue on other Ontario blades. While I'm not unhappy I would have thought their finish and checking would have been better.

Got almost the exact same problem on my SP 10. Doesnt affect function but yes I expected better QC than this as well

Hi CelticCross74, Just saw ur post on hand sharpened SP10. that is the same lines as mine, thanks for the reply. I was thinking last night of putting a full flat grind on it, just the same as now and take away the secondary bevel and how good it would be. U did it. Great work.

Hey guys,

I'm going to jump in here and give some explanation, because frankly, I think we owe one. We've had a couple of QC issues in recent years. They've generally been more "annoying" than systemic or severe, but it has been something that definitely needs fixing. We've dramatically expanded our QA department in both size and scope of work. Our quality is improving rapidly and I think it will continue to do so.

Also, remember that these knives have a lifetime warranty. I know you're talking about re-grinding them, but if you'd rather we swap them out for ones that are the way they should be (which is to say, perfect) either email knifesales@ontarioknife.com or PM me here. We stand behind every knife we make 100%.

Hi OKC,
Thanks for the reply. I have seen a number of demonstrations with the SP10 on youtube now and they all have the same uneven grind. There is one of a guy virtually cutting through a 4 inch branch by digging in the tip and gouging it away. Nil damage to knife. I don't think it actually affects the knife strength at all. I am in Australia so the postage would be a killer. Thanks for the offer though. If anything does happen I"ll let you know. Again, thanks for the company reply here.

Hey OKC!

So this issue has been taken care of? How about the factory edge? Im going to take advantage of your offer of exchange. OKC is a company I want very much to believe in. Email sent.

Contacted OKC and already got a FedEx label emailed to me thank you OKC! Hope I dont have to have the new correctly ground SP10 pro sharpened like I had to have the first one. It was near blunt when I got it I hope the new one actually has a good edge on it! The mismatched swedge grind really bothered me I am quite pleased OKC is stepping up on this one!

I believe this is the video you mentioned. I love these videos. People show me what my knife can do without me having to beat my own knife up :D

Since I started this thread I thought I should put in the attitude of the OKC. Yes: Douglas, that is the video, so I'm not really worried about the tip strength. I have browsed the web for a while about these and there are no reports of an SP10 breaking. The moderator from OKC offered a fix for me, and thought I am happy with the knife I decided later to actually contact them. I got a response that day from the Sales dept. Their advice was to contact the seller firstly to see if he would replace the knife, and if not, contact them and see what could be arranged. The seller, AussieKnives, was great. ( as always). The matter has been settled and I am very happy with the result both from aussieKnives and OKC with their response. I was never really after anything other than make a comment because I did make a fantastic find with an Ontario SP23 Ranger - now that is a blade that is beyond belief - and another story.
Thanks OKC

Unfortunately, retailers have years worth of stock. My latest OKC knife purchased in 2015 was manufactured in 2012.

Are the more recent models hand grind too or are they done with CNC?

Two very good points. I'll check with Toooj on the CNC thing so I don't put my foot in my mouth.

As for the retailers having years of stock, that's true, some of them do. And those are always tough to address because it's very difficult to know who has what (after all, these aren't cars, there's no VIN). That said, as you've seen in action here, if you're not happy with the knife, we'll take care of you.

For a while now I have head about Ontario's bad grinds. I mostly hear they and not sharp and sometimes I hear the grind is not even.

When I bought my Marine Raider a few years back I was expecting trouble right out of the box but once I opened it and took it out realized that all I had ever heard was just pure wrong. The knife was perfect as far as grind size on both sides and the blade was as sharp as any knife I had ever received was. It sliced paper like a ho knife through butter and it even shaved my arm .

I tend to not listen to rumors and just get it and learn.

That'd be great

And those are always tough to address

Absolutely. It's just the nature of supply chain. Sometimes takes a while before changes hit end user.

So far I'm happy. No ill effect yet as far as usage goes. Still waiting for the Woodsman though. Hope it'll be out soon.

I think majority of their knives are fine. And from what I read here, they're working hard on QC. I'll continue to buy OKC products.

All,

I'll throw my $0.02 in the discussion.
Thanks for all who posted. You are all correct that there are issues. We have a long way to go but we are moving in a new and better position. Not only with new equipment but more importantly a new mind set on how Ontario does things. Yes, we are buying new CNC grinders. In fact there will be a new VG-3 CNC grinder in the factory very soon....like months. That said, the old analog Nicholas Grinders will still be in use but with quality gauging and upgrades so that uneven grinds, out of spec edge thicknesses and all sorts of issues will be addressed, monitored and eliminated. We have a new Quality group that has very strong ISO-Fu. Every part of the Organization will be documented and trained. Procedures, drawings, specifications will be the standard. Accurate gauging, fixtures and measurements will be the guides. All of the fancy new equipment will be useless without being paired to a new mindset.
We have moved into a new add on section and the old building will be upgraded.
Dan Maragni and I, along with the Quality Department are going step-by step through the manufacturing processes and mapping out direction for improvements and changes.
However, inspite of all of the changes, we want to keep the certain key cultural values that has made Ontario a legacy company.
OKC Mod is only one of many new hires that will drive this 125 YO company to new heights. Drew is a Marketing Analyst of the first caliber, also our Social Media contact. At the Blade Show, someone asked him why a knife company needed a Marketing Analyst. His response: Imperial-Schrade, Camillus Cutlery, Lamson.....
To all who buy our products...Thanks. Stay with us the ride will be exciting.

And this , Ladies & Gentlemen, is how the salvation of the American Cutlery Industry begins.

My first and so far only OKC acquisition is the RAT-7 that I've had for almost a year now...and I love it! I knew when I bought it that my RAT-7 wouldn't be my last Ontario blade. So it's nice to see the company's commitment to it products and customers as demonstrated in this thread.

Well done, guys!

I hope that no-one thinks I was "knocking" Ontario. I have several OKC products. My EDC is a RAT 2, and I have a RAT 1 for heavier work. When I get a chance I will dig out my SP23 and take a pic and put the story of acquiring that up. Love the brand.
