SP8 or keep my Junglas?

What if I throw another into the mix? Has anyone heard of a Silky Nata single edge? It's not as thick as the Ontario, but I like Japanese products. I can't post a link to it and I'm not sure about the video rules, so hopefully someone has some experience with one.

I understand it may not be as good, but how large is the difference between them for bushcraft factoring in the versatility of the SP8?

A HUGE difference.
My brother now has my SP8, and there isn't even close to being a comparison.
The Junglas chops better, works as a machete better, and cuts like a knife better.

The SP8 has a very obtuse grind in comparison (primary grind, not the edge), and therefore does not perform cutting tasks as well.
However, it IS a sharpened prybar; if you want an indestructible car-tool, throw one in the trunk. :)

And you can get one for about $60-$70 easily enough...don't sell the Junglas.

How is it just for processing wood with a saw and a small knife for other tasks?

I was hoping someone had heard of that Silky knife. I love their saws and it's intriguing. Is posting a Youtube video allowed?

BTW.. Another Ontario that chops better than the Junglas is the SP53. 5160 is awesome high carbon spring steel and the belly is so pronounced, its a truly ridiculous chopper. If you want to see it quickly, skip to the 3:00 mark on the video.

I'm guessing that's a yes to videos :) Here is that Japanese Hatchet I was talking about compared to the SP8.

Awesome vid.. thanks for posting it. I love that silky saw! I won't switch from my Bahco just yet because I like a folding saw, but wow! That thing eats wood!

My Silky saws are by far the best folding saws I own. That's why I'm wondering about their "hatchet".

I'm still not sure I need it with my SP50, but for now I'm going to keep my Junglas and buy either the SP8 or that Silky Nata.

This is a description of the Nata.
240mm Single Edged Hatchet. The Silky Nata is a unique 'machete' from Japan. The single edge, mono-construction blade is made from a special alloy using traditional Japanese sword steel making methods and is designed to keep its edge longer, even with continual use. The non-slip rubber handle is designed to reduce impact on the hand by up to 60%, making the Nata ideal for heavy duty applications. The blade is perfectly weighed to swing smoothly to ensure a very efficient cut. Ideal for de-limbing and clearing brush. Comes with a hard plastic sheath and easy-release belt clip. Blade Length 240mm (9.5 Inch), Weight 880g (1 lb. 8 oz.), Blade thickness 5mm (3/16"+). Single Sided Bevel.

For the kind of tasks you're describing, I think you'd be happy with the SP8. In the video, the guy is using it for the types of things I normally use a hatchet for myself, but if I wanted something a little easier to carry, the SP8 would serve that purpose. Mine was frankly bought as more of an overall utility tool, but there's no reason I couldn't bring it along with me in the woods. Paired with a dedicated saw, and with a smaller knife for finer cutting tasks, you'd be in business.

I tend to agree and will be buying the SP18, but I do like Japanese products. I'm considering purchasing one of the Silky if I could find out more about them.
