Spa treatment for Micarta inlayed knives.

Hello,
I am working on a deal for small inlayed Sebenza 21 Micarta. The knife has been resharpened very poorly, and the handles are in bad shape. The micarta looks ok, but the titanium is pretty beat up. I am not worried about the blade, because I know CRK will resharpen when I send it in for a spa treatment but I am concerned about the scales. On the CRK website it states they do not refinish the inlayed scales.

Can someone give me a definitive answer on whether they will re sandblast the scales, and if so will this cost me anything extra?

Thank you. Have a great weekend!

Hard to say without pictures, but I think the micara might just be dirty. I would scrub the micarta clean then send in for the spa.

Oh I see the ti scratched; but CRK doesn't touch up inlaid scales. I'm not certain if they will re sandblast even at cost. If they don't I guess you have to deal with it or use scotch bright. Sorry im no help, perhaps others will chime in.

Thanks for the reply! I was hoping this wouldn't be the case :-/

I'm pretty sure Micarta can be refurbished, just not the wood inlays. I would be more worried about the blade personally. Even if CRK does Resharpened it to a nice bevel it will remove a significant amount of the blade

Do you think the blade is in that bad of shape? Should I pass on the knife?

Yes, CRK will refinish micarta, just like a plain handled Sebenza, at no extra cost. The reason is because micarta can be blasted but wood cannot. Micarta is the only inlay that crk will refurbish.

Thank you for clearing this up! Now, I just have to decide if the blade is too far gone.

Personally I would pass on it, unless you can get a really good deal on it. If they fix the edge, and remove a substantial amount of material, you may not be happy with it, and you would have to spend the extra $$$ for a new blade.
If you can get a great deal on it, and just want a user that you don't have to worry about, go for it.

do you think the amount of material that has to be removed is that substantial? I touch up my knives on a fine stone and strop, but I have no experience reprofiling. So I have no idea how much material would need to be removed.

I would, but that is just me. The bevel would have to be taken back some, and I assume it would be somewhere near the middle of your edge roughly but I am to certain

I would say it depends on what you want. It would not take much to make that knife sharp and to work reasonably well, but if you are concerned about how the blade looks, it is a bigger job.

In some regards, a keen eye will always be able to spot that the blade has been substantially ground away, and the blade life has been shortened somewhat. But for most USERS, that blade could be made to work pretty well.

That said, I would consider this when it comes to price.

Thanks for all the feedback! You guys are great. I ended up passing on it. I think knives are meant to be used, therefore all my knives are "users" I'm just not comfortable buying a knife to abuse at this price point. Thats what I use my mora's and essee's for.

I got your email. For the price you sent me, I would pass too. Nothing wrong with using a knife, that's what they are for, but "abusing" is different.

Personally, for that price, I couldn't be happy with it. Everytime I pulled it out, and saw the damage, or even just knowing what had been done to it, it wouldn't be the enjoyable experience that it should be...
