Hi all - I want to put a black spacer under stabilized wood scales, with black G10 bolsters, on a set of kitchen knives for my brother. But I'm worried the vulcanized spacer material is a bad choice for a kitchen knife b/c it might absorb moisture over time. also, will it blend well with a black G10 bolster?

I saw that TKS had some "high-tech" spacer material that is waterproof, but they are sold out. And I can't find a sheet of 1/16" black G10 anywhere. Does anyone have some helpful ideas?

thanks much!

I think you are on the right track with using something like g-10. I used regular spacer material on one kitchen knife and it warped and needed to be replaced.

man AKS is local, which means that as a wholesaler they can't sell to me! How crazy is that? IF anyone knows of another source that would be very helpful. thanks!

We can sell to you if you have a Washington State Reseller Permit. I didn't make the new (stupid) law but I will obey it. This new law is one of the reasons we will leave Washington state. After we leave Washington we can sell you anything you want without you getting a the permit.

I would suggest Corian or Avonite. They are solid surface counter top materials. If there is a local shop they just might cut you some thin pieces that would work great. It is nonporous since it's synthetic and it would be safe for kitchen knives. It's easy stuff to work with whether you are making the handle scales or liners. And there are lots of colors!

Get your reseller permit. It doesn't cost you anything and get some of the super thin red G-10 from AKS. And then get all your other stuff there too... cus' it's good idea-n-stuff.

I didnt care for that hi tech (plastic) stuff. If its the same junk i tried it cracked all to pieces when i cut it with scissors. That guy on ebay that sells all the Chinese blanks sells some plastic liners that work well.Sorry,i cant think of his business, but he's a huge seller.

dont mean to hijack, but do you guys think it would be to busy to put a spacer, and bolsters

I had the same concerns with the vulcanized material. I think I have used it before also but I gave that away, I hope his knife isn't being destroyed by water.
I did have some of that colored wood even seem to swell a slight amount. The one that is like plywood with lots of thin layers of various colors.

USAKnifemaker has liner material as well. I often use their G10 liners, they come in a variety of colors and thicknesses

I think the original project is done by now. Please look at the date before posting .Thread closed.
