Looking for opinions on spacers. What is the best material for color retention and for durability. In my first knife I used fiber and had a comment about them not being well suited due to the fact water destroys them.

I primarily am looking to make hunting knives and eventually some kitchen knives. I know thin G10 is used
but what other materials are used?

I've heard of one person using red plastic plates. I've never tried it but imagine you'd have to scuff them up real good to get the epoxy to bond.

Use some thin G10 from Alpha Knife Supply. Works great and is available in a variety of colors and thicknesses.

I have some 1/16 red G10 from Jantz but doesn't show much color from the edge. Will the color show more after sanding and buffing?

I find red and black are the best colors to use. Tint your epoxy to match and you will have perfect joints.

Stacy, I've used red G10 liners but never get the red color I'm looking for. Does red tinted epoxy help with red G10?

G10 is translucent, so the red doesn't show up very bright. If you want bright red, you'll have to go with the fiber or plastic spacers. Texas Knifemaker's Supply has some 'high tech' plastic spacers that I plan to try, but have been slow getting around to it...

TKS high tech spacer is indeed the red you are looking for. It is, however, VERY brittle. Cut oversized and grind to fit

Scrap Kydex works well for tan or black. gotta be a little careful of getting it too hot when grinding it but its easy to work with and seems to hold up well.

To get the true color out of G10, it needs to be finished to a high grit. The finer the finish, the darker and more vivid it is.
Here is a hunter with red G10 liners from AKS.
