Hi,

Has anyone been to Spain recently (or currently lives there)?

What is the attitude toward small pocket knives these days?
Are there metal detectors / x-ray machines in museums & other tourist places? Will they take my knife?

Can anyone recommend knife shops in Madrid, Toledo, & Barcelona?

Any recommendations for must see places is appreciated as well.

Thanks

I don't live in Spain but I travel there often (I've got Spanish citizenship in addition to my Argentine one), attitude towards pocket knives in large cities is pretty much what you might expect in most countries. The law states that you can carry a folding knife with a blade under 11cm (a bit over 4 inches), no automatics.

Museums have x-rays or metal detectors (sometimes both), but in my experience guards don't freak out with pocket knives. I went to a lot of museums (and worked at a couple!) and I would just put my knife in my bag and put it through the X-ray machine. The guards would usually direct me to a locker at the lobby where I could leave my stuff, or to a cloakroom where I could leave my bag and get a slip to retrieve it afterwards. Very polite and nice.

When I knew I would be going to museums and similar places, I took either a SAK or a Leatherman tool with me and left my more "tactical" knives at my apartment.

As far as knife shops go, Cuchillería Simón in Madrid has a long history (www.cuchilleriasimon.es) and in Toledo, José Moreno's La Espada Artesana (www.laespadaartesana.com) is quite good. José handles a lot of limited edition series for the largest Spanish knife forum and although his store has a lot of knife shaped souvenirs for tourists (like most stores in Toledo), he's got some really good stuff as well.

I see the original post is a bit old but I've never had a problem there, mostly visiting Barcelona. Carried a pocket knife everywhere.

Thanks, guys. My family and I are planning a Barcelona trip for spring. Good info here.

I'm planning a trip for next year, hopefully around summer. From browsing the net and purchasing from Spanish online stores, seems like the hub of knifemaking in Spain has moved from Toledo to Albacete.
