Spalted Maple Hunters

Here's a couple of hunters that I'm planning on taking to the Little Rock show next month. I can't get enough of the cross-cut spalted maple. These blocks are from Mike up at Woodlab.

The guardless one is 1095, 5 1/4" blade. The other is 1084, about 5".

For me the guard is a little long, but overall both look great.

I was expecting a comment on that guard-- I agree. I made that knife a little while back and looking at it now, it seems long. I may change that prior to the show.

The other one is a more funtional to me--I prefer no guard on a hunter that I use.

Very nice spalted maple and fine hunters overall.
I agree with Keith in that the guard is a bit long.

With such a beautiful blade and amazing handle material, how on earth
did you manage to keep it for so long, longish guard and all.... :)

Great looking work....Like them both !
But do agree on the guard being a little to long.
 
Both terrific, but I am really drawn to that guardless one - it reminds me of a smaller version of the chopper you showed a while back that was also entered in the Best Bowie thread. A matched pair would make a great set. ;)

I agree with others about the longish guard on the second piece.

I'm with Roger here, both very nice (minus the x-tra guard length), but the first particularly so, and recalls that similar Bowie. I'll look forward to seeing your knives in Little Rock.

Tad, They are both great looking......but +1 on the long guard, for me shorter would be better.

personally I'd leave the guard as is and see what happens next month. I don't find it objectionable, and for practical purposes for a hunter it does add a large safety factor for the guy using it.
However, for a collector who wouldn't be using it and who is obsessed with proportions, lines and aesthetics, I can understand why they might not be into a guard of that size on this knife.

Thanks for the comments. I think I am going to shorten the guard, that was bothering me before I posted it. That will be a quick fix. I'll post an updated pic.

Tad, I'm a big fan of your work, and these are exceptional as well! The spalted maple is very nice!

Tad they are both very nice did you clay the top one and edge quench the bottom one
