Spalted Maple Hunters

Here's a couple of hunters that I'm planning on taking to the Little Rock show next month. I can't get enough of the cross-cut spalted maple. These blocks are from Mike up at Woodlab.

The guardless one is 1095, 5 1/4" blade. The other is 1084, about 5".

Thanks for looking,

Tad

For me the guard is a little long, but overall both look great.

Keith,

I was expecting a comment on that guard-- I agree. I made that knife a little while back and looking at it now, it seems long. I may change that prior to the show.

The other one is a more funtional to me--I prefer no guard on a hunter that I use.

Very nice spalted maple and fine hunters overall.
I agree with Keith in that the guard is a bit long.

With such a beautiful blade and amazing handle material, how on earth
did you manage to keep it for so long, longish guard and all.... :)

All the best,

Great looking work....Like them both !
But do agree on the guard being a little to long.

Both terrific, but I am really drawn to that guardless one - it reminds me of a smaller version of the chopper you showed a while back that was also entered in the Best Bowie thread. A matched pair would make a great set. ;)

I agree with others about the longish guard on the second piece.

Tad,

I'm with Roger here, both very nice (minus the x-tra guard length), but the first particularly so, and recalls that similar Bowie. I'll look forward to seeing your knives in Little Rock.

Tad, They are both great looking......but +1 on the long guard, for me shorter would be better.

personally I'd leave the guard as is and see what happens next month. I don't find it objectionable, and for practical purposes for a hunter it does add a large safety factor for the guy using it.
However, for a collector who wouldn't be using it and who is obsessed with proportions, lines and aesthetics, I can understand why they might not be into a guard of that size on this knife.

Good stuff man:thumbup:

Thanks for the comments. I think I am going to shorten the guard, that was bothering me before I posted it. That will be a quick fix. I'll post an updated pic.

Thanks,
Tad

Tad, I'm a big fan of your work, and these are exceptional as well! The spalted maple is very nice!
