spalted pecan?

I cut quite a bit of firewood throughout the winter for some extra cash. Today I was cutting up a big pecan that has been laying dead from storm damage 2 if not 3 years ago. Some of it is showing some zone lines and staring to show some color variations. I know proper procedure is to ship it off to be stabilized. How big should I make the blocks? I was cutting 16" lengths and some of it is well over 20" in diameter (deeper heart wood not showing deterioration of course). Do I need to dry it out more so than it already is? Most of it will end up as firewood, I just thought I might try and make some scales out of it if I can find a couple pieces with higher concentration of zone lines.

Thank you as always,
Chris

I think whomever is stabilizing it would tell you the best size to ship for treatment. Bottom line though if your using it for scales, a 1.5x1.5x6 chunk is the minimum i would send.

I've used spalted pecan and it looks great when finished. Still got some left over from a Katrina victim. The root ball was where most of the figure was at.
