If it does, I am not surprised that you did not use it...I would be afraid to hit anything with it!

If you knew anything about wood, you'd know that the striping on fiddleback/tiger striped maple runs at right angles to the direction of the grain. The same with most striped woods, like walnut, etc.
Give the maker credit for knowing what he was doing.
