Spam - the FOOD

Spam is good stuff. I have used the individual foil packs on backpacking trips. My favorite way to eat it is how we had it for dinner tonight - alternate layers of spam slices and pineapple slices in a baking pan, with a healthy amount of brown sugar and mustard sauce on top, baked, and served over rice.

I grew-up on this Chinese-style luncheon meat as Spam was a stateside product.

Waaaay less salty too  ;)

I do not, but only because there is no frying pan in my BOB.

Don't need one.

Throw some water in a canteen cup, pot, whatever, throw in some chunked SPAM, mashed potato mix/rice, and you have a decent meal.

SPAM is a great survival food precise because of the reasons it's not all that great to eat every day:

It has lots of fat (Calories and ability to use fat-soluble vitamins -- no "rabbit starvation" here!).

It has lots of SALT (keeps it from spoiling -- even in the FL heat, a half can of SPAM will last from morning to afternoon -- and your body needs salt to work).

So SPAM, some kind of instant carb, and a bottle of multivitamins, and you can survive well for a good, long time.

Spam like tuna is a good source of protein, it is also kinda high in sodium which in everyday life not too good, in survival extra sodium can be a good thing. So yes I am a proponent of Spam in BOB, along with tuna, peanut butter, oatmeal, and cliff bars.

If nothing else I see Spam being good bait for traps and fishing as it has a good odor and is able to be molded onto bait sticks or hooks.

I do not, but only because there is no frying pan in my BOB.

It fries easily in your canteen cup. It has so much fat it won't stick. Otherwise, put a slice on a forked stick the same way you'd do a fish.

when i started my business in 1984 i ate spam & hot cakes & powdered milk for 18 months. must i worked i'm 71 & stiil packing thru the brush with 27 year old kids. they are whipped when we get back to the truck, but i'm whipped also. however i ran the race.

Spam is in my BOB. So is tuna and chicken, all in pouches. The empty pouches have enough stink on them after use to use as bait in traps. The cans do too.

Another reason to use Spam in a BOB is that most kids won't raid your BOB for Spam, but will go after almost anything else.

Oh yeah? Live on it for three or four weeks, then tell me how you like it... :p

Actually, as a kid we did. When things got tight, Spam and/or hot dogs was the protein in the house served with rice and ketchup. Spam stew with tomato sauce and onions over rice was a staple.

I love spam as a woods food.. I use the packets or the cans..
I use it to make my famous "Hawaiian Surprise" camp dinner... Loved by spammers and spam haters..
I don;t eat spam raw though .. But cooked it has salt protien and fat.. 3 much neded components when out in the cold woods.
I more often than not slice it up and put it on a flat on some coals Fries up nice.

OK, now youi're just making me hungry.:p

I had to buy a large box of instant potatoes instead of the small box a recipe called for and have been eye-balling the rest of the box thinking that some of it should go in my kit. NOW, I know why.

I like SPAM. But then, I liked the ham and eggs that came in c-rations too.

yup - fried spam with rice and ketchup is where it's at. then again, i'm filipino and we've been known to eat pretty much anything. i didn't know spam came in individual packets! must...go...grocery...shopping.
