Spanish folding knives typology - part 2: The folding knives from Andalusia and other stories - A se

Prester John Prester John , Thanks a lot Vicent! It took a while to gather all the information and lots of reading. Even in Albacete (the cutlery capital of Spain) it is not easy to find information related to old Spanish folding knives or folding knives fencing.

@Fodderwing, thanks a lot! :D I hope you have enjoyed the reading even with my poor English knowledge haha.

@RayseM hahaha sadly that was long time ago, there is no longer fencing with folding knives :p. Un saludo

@afishhunter thanks a lot! :D

Pinemoon Pinemoon , if you use it on your signature do not forget to correct my typos! ;) thanks a lot Ray!

Prester John Prester John , Z from Jay-Z or from the Zorro?

@RayseM, simply beautiful.

@eisman, if you speak Spanish I can give you a lot of information ;) just send me a pm.

SIG96 SIG96 , muchísimas gracias! Excelente dominio del español! Solsona is (or was) one of the former capitals of cutlery from Spain, but it is a “French” like cutlery, they are designs from France mostly. There is a reknown brand called “Pallares” you might have heard about them. Muchísimas gracias y mucho gusto en conocerte :)
Gracias, Jose. Paralles si es la familia que e creado mi navaja. The Paralles Navaja Busa is the knife that absolutely made me fall in love with the leaf blade style. Looking at the knives that don from Albacete, as well as the experience with my little Busa, I think it only a matter of time before I order a proper Navaja! Amo la comida, la musica, y mas importante el futbol de tu pais, hermano. Estoy enamorado con la cultura Espanola :D

I have traveled two times in Andalusia, seen Cordoba and Alhambra. It was my childhood dream to see those places and I'm sure to return there. The history of the area is most interesting, with arab, christian and jewish people living side by side. I know flamenco music has a lot of arabian and jewish influence. Can it be said that navajas have also multicultural influences in their design?

Wonderful write up with fascinating information, ArtesaniaHerreros, and your knives are quite beautiful.
Nice to see that you referenced Rafael Martinez, and others may be interested to know of another great book of his titled "Navajas Antiguas" published in 2003.
It is a world class book featuring Navaja styled knives from all over Spain as well as some from other European countries.
Enclosed is a picture of the book along with an Albecete model and a very similar example shown in the Martinez book.
The knife dates to the late 1800s or possibly early 1900s and is fairly large with a handle length of nearly 6 inches.
The horn handles have some lovely "Pique" work which is the inlay of metal pins into the handle. The locking blade is very unique and leaves little doubt as to its use.
Navaja knives, especially those from Albecete and Sevilla, are not for the timid. :)

Pinemoon Pinemoon Is Beyonce married to Jay-Z? I never liked him but he owned my respect now hahaha.

@RayseM Awesome music! If you are interested in the Spanish guitar I could put some links to a few good flamenco videos ;)

Prester John Prester John , olé!!

SIG96 SIG96 Gracias! Ven a visitarme pronto! :D

H HFinn , the navajas has influence mostly from Muslims and Christians as far as I know! Jews used to be medics and bankers, they used the scalpels mostly ;)!

H herder , SUPER AWESOME STUFF! I didn’t know that book was translated to English! I have a huge library of old books and other stuff. Thanks for sharing this! As said, if there is anyone interested in receiving more information I can even scan a few parts of them and send them to you. Sadly not everyone here speaks Spanish and my English is like a 5 years old kid haha.

Super nice stuff!
