Could someone explain the use of the "Spanish Notch" to me ? I've seen them on the Bagwell Hell's Belles, and am wondering what the practical use could be.
There is none - the Spanish notch is a decorative only element. It is a relic of the sword catching notches used on the left hand daggers that were earlier specifically designed for such work.
A Spanish Notch at the end of the cutting edge can help prevent a dull spot between a good edge and the ricasso caused by the inability to get a hone into the very last bit of the edge. The notch aloows the user to get a hone to every part of the cutting edge neatly without running into the plunge line.
Because of this they are liked by many users, but he fact that they can catch on stuff they are similarly disliked by those who find them a PITA whilst dressing game and the like. It's a 'swings and roundabouts' thing.
