Hey, i have an opportunity to get a hinderer xm-18 and i can't decide whether to get a spanto or slicer grind. Any thoughts?? What do you guys like better. I've never handled a hinderer.
Thanks!

I've owned both. It comes down to preference. In a small 3" pocket knife, I liked the slicer grind. In the 3.5" I preferred the Spanto.

Unless I could get the fireman's discount I wouldn't buy either. I was looking at them just today and $850 is nuts for that knife. I'll stick with my Sebenza.

^^ This, unless you can get it at MSRP, why not buy two Sebenzas or a really nice custom instead?

I've owned both. The 3.5" spanto would be fine if I were deployed. Slicer in either length is preferred if you don't expect to cut the top out of tin cans all day.

Thanks guys. I already have 2 sebenzas and i am getting the hinderer at msrp. No way i could purchase at after market prices... Ridiculous!!!

Lucky man.

I have a Spanto, and honestly the best use that I've found with the spanto is to pry the meat out of coconut halves. The grind is too thick to cut efficiently nor is it good at piercing... I can see the spanto grind as a total "oh f@$#" knife/folding prybar, but for edc? I don't think so. I tried to edc it, but I found my Sebenza to be more efficient in terms of weight and cutting ability. I originally picked the Spanto grind because it was a grind that I've never experienced.

Rick Hinderer prefers the Spanto, after all its his patent. If you want a heavy duty knife to slice and pry get Rick's fave.

Nuts . . . ridiculous . . . inexplicable . . . obscene . . . whatever it is, I sure has heck can't figure it out. What I really don't get is why dealers are selling Hinderer's for more than twice the MSRP. Isn't MSRP what dealer pricing is supposed to be based on?

In any event, enjoy your new Hinderer. If you're buying one at MSRP, I assume you're a first responder. If I'm correct about that, thanks for your service.

Nonsense, my spantos cut just fine, as do the spantos of many other members.

Lets see a photo of your XM?

Which sort of brings it all down to what you expect your folder to be able to do. If using it to cut things efficiently is the goal, I'd go with the slicer. If using it to breach doors is more your thing, I'd go with the spanto. ;)

Thank you everyone. I'm thinking slicer grind with a blue/black handle scale. Even the slicer seems like a rather robust blade as far as folders go. If i need to brech a door i stick with my size 11's... Or a halogen.

I'm sure they cut just fine but there's no denying the fact that thin cuts better than thick.

I was not disputing blade geometry / ease of slicing, that is obvious.

What I do dispute is that suggestion that the spanto grind -

is too thick to cut efficienty,
not good for piercing,
no good for EDC,
only good as a pry bar.

Complete rubbish ^^^^ I suggest you internet experts buying into that nonsense go and try a spanto XM, the reality is quite different.

I've edc'ed a spanto for about 18 months and I have not have any issues with its cutting / slicing ability, it actually pierces very well too and carries just fine.

There are many other members of this forum who edc a spanto, again no issues at all with cutting.
