I was wondering if you had any suggestions on a back up knife for camping and i already have a bk-16

What sort of task do you have in mind?

It is hard to beat a BK-11,14,24 for a backup for any bigger knife.

Big knife/little knife works so well that it's been around a few hundred years. Like Dresnor said, 11, 14, 24 pairs up quite nicely with any of the big Beckers.

I love my BK-11 and 14. They are great for fire prep, cleaning fish, and food prep. They are also a lot tougher that most blades in that size range.

I personally would go larger since he already has a BK-14. I use a SAK as a backup, but the 14/24 works well for that too. So, the size is purely up to you and him as far as comfort level. But it is hard to beat a BK-16/BK-17 as a regular 4" user unless he would prefer larger, hence BK-7, BK-9, or BK-10 (vs the BK-2).

It would help if we knew what you already have (not all of us have seen your intro thread). With that being said I think a bk11/14/24 would serve you well :) Good luck!

Up your old man by going 24, and don't forget to remind him every chance you get. :D

BK-7 is my typical off-the-belt camp knife (and I always have a belt knife of some sort, Bravo-1 or similar). My back-up knife is always a Mora HD Companion.

This sounds like an excellent plan....with some G10 scales also.

And for a primary camp knife, you really need to get a BK5...the name says it all..."Magnum Camp Knife". It's my favorite.

I usually carry my BK-9 as my primary, then as my back ups I have a 2,3,7,10,11,14,15,16,17,24 and a few 13s thrown in sporadically.

X-man is a young man he's 5'2 100lbs soaking wet. He carries a BK-16 as his main knife.

14/24 would be nice and a perfect pairing. Or go big with a 5, 9, 4, or a 7...Depending though, a Mora is another great back up blade light, cheap and sharp... Always good to have one around... Other than that a Vic SAK Farmer, a Leatherman Wave, or any good MT really compliment fixed blades well and give you some added versatility.

A Mora is not a bad idea, and if you get one of the "Light my Fire" Moras with the firesteel in the handle....the firesteel part works great and they are not expensive. Also good for smaller hands.
