Do you ever buy, a spare knife, to go with you favorite EDC? It seems, alot of good knives get discoutinued. BM730, 720. I had to get a spare ZT300.

If I like a knife, I'll get a second one to keep. Then I can use the first one with (almost) complete peace of mind.

i think theres a difference between " spare " and " duplicate ". i got lots of spares, but no duplicates.

If the price is right and I like it I will get more then one of the same knife. I figure that I can always consider them spars. Or if the opportunity presents itself give them as gifts.

If I'm looking for different EDC, I buy a used knife on ebay, tune it up and beat the crap out of it.

If it holds up, I buy two of them. One to use and one to collect.

Then I tune up the ebay knife again and give it to somebody who's eyes popped out when they saw a good knife and what it can do.

If my EDC get discontinued I would get some spares. My favorite EDCs are Spyderco C83 Persian(so I have few spares), Caly3, Native4 (no spares).

No spares yet, but I was thinking of picking up a second PacSalt on the off chance I lose my current one. Or I might just try a different knife.

No. That just seems a little crazy to me. People who buy a $300 knife and don't use it. Or even a $50 knife and don't use it. It's like that wierd kids with all the un-opened star wars figures. But hey, that's you. I'll play with boba fett and darth vader if you know what I mean.

the only two dupes I have are a Spyderco FG Manix, one for EDC, one for backup in case something happens to the first one, and a Dodo, one PE, one SE, both blue G-10, technically these two aren't strictly dupes, as one is SE, one is PE, but one is there to back up the other

neither of these knives are considered "collectible" knives, if something happens to one of them, the other will be brought into service while the EDC is sent in for repair

I don't really own any repeats, but I've picked up an Opinel #6 to carry in place of the #8. It fits a little nicer in the pockets, and the #8 is a nice knife to keep in the car.

I guess I just don't really worry much about knives getting discontinued. It's kind of sad that Schrade and Camillus are now gone, but other companies are still producing traditional patterns, so, while it sucks, there are still alternatives.

Also, I'm a cheap bastid.

I have a Griptillian 550 with a set of the Kevin Wilkins G10 scales. Since the scales cost so much more than the base knife, I bought a second one just in case I break something. It would be a shame to have a set of $140 scales and have no knife to use them on.

I duplicate favorite knives like the Mora of Sweden, KA-BAR Ethan Becker BK2 and BK11 and also because of OCD which I may have a touch of. . .

I may have stock piled enough stuff for generations ; )

I've got so many knives and my tastes change so much from day to day that I never felt compelled to buy a duplicate. I've never "worn" a knife out due to my EDC group being large.

I will say thought that I am considering picking up a second Buck Vantage Pro - I just bought that one and it is really growing on me - I could pass it along to my son or give it as a gift if the first one holds up.
