Hi Gang,

I have a 1HP 110V 1725RPM TEFC Baldor electric motor sitting in the shop. I have been brainstorming about what I could build with it and thought y'all might have some ideas..

Two that come to mind are:
Buffer
Disk Sander

Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Jerid

If it were my shop, I'd get a mandrel and a pulley and build a buffer. Of course, that's just because I'm sick of using my drill press as a buffer ;)

Unless your into mirror finishes you will use a disc sander way more.I use mine alot.Dave:)

my only concern with a disk sander is the freequency of changing sanding disks.. do you need to progress through the grits like you do on a belt sander or are the areas you typically disk sand hidden.. for example... where the bolsters meet the handle material or blade.. Would you recommend getting a disk sander setup that has the table or is the disk alone sufficient?

I dont do mirror finishes on blades but occasionally buff guards and handle material..

I did build a buffer attachment for my KMG grinder and in concept it works awesome but the buffing arbor I bought (Shop Fox from Grizzly) is a POS and I dont believe the shaft is very true or ballanced. I ended up with a bad vibration that can actually move my KMG (thats a bad vibration)..

Make a disc. Changing paper is no big deal. You will probably get to the point of doing more finishing by hand. I find it is easier and much more control. But the disc will give you FLAT grinds. Use a quality full sheet paper and the feathering disc adhesive and you can change a disc in a few seconds.

Built a disk sander. I am and I now have 5-12" disks of 3/8 mild steel and 5 of 9". I have built a hub for each end of my 3/4' shaft. Both are drilled with the same pattern and will be mounted with almost 3/8" of shaft sticking out. The disks will be drilled and tapped with same pattern as hubs. Then I can loosen 4-5/16 bolts and remove disk, stick on disk with another grit and tighten bolts. Bolts will be flush or a bit below surface of disk. All will have one extra pin to orientate to special hole in hub so always exact same line up. I plan to mill a slight bevel on all the disks. Then have a 36 grit an 60, 120. 240, 320 on the 12s. the 9s can have like 120 up to say 600.

I had this same spare motor after up-grading my Wilton square wheel to a VFD.

I make folders and having this horizontal grinder using 2x 72 belts with a platen that is square with the small diameter contact wheel has been wonderful for giving my knives a cleaner fit and finish.

Ken, nice grinder. I like it simple and effective. Love the base plate.lol

Derek- get a 8 inch bench grinder with a 3/4hp motor and have a buffer

Ken, how do you use that grinder exactly? I'm dense. Sorry.
