First let me give credit to Howard Wallace for the idea for this. Basically I took an anodized aluminium key blank to the machine shop on campus and milled a slot into it, then fitted and expoxied one of Greg's small ferrocium rods into it. I wanted a sparker I could keep with me that wouldn't take up much space. I think it turned out pretty good.

very nice. Might consider adding one of those slip on rubber key color coders for extra grip.
Also, does the steel in the micra work well with the ferrocium?

Sesoku,

Nicely done.

Quarterstaff,

I use a similar setup to Sesoku's. Several of the micra blades will throw a spark, but none of them very large. I carry a striker on my keyring. It is constructed from a piece of hacksaw blade with the teeth filed off and the corners rounded. This striker will throw a large spark.

It is rough on the firestarter, but the saw teeth left on the piece of hacksaw blade will throw a lot of sparks.Leave the teeth on and try that.

Looks great! My solution is to put Greg's rod in my wallet in the small zippered compartment, along with a short length of hacksaw blade. My wallet goes where I go so I always have it.

I get some pleasure from finding a relentlessly peaceful use for a combative looking knife.
