All this talk about new Sheriff's got me thinking... Who is your favorite? Good guy or Bad guy... your choice.

My family's ranch is close to Comanche, Texas where John Wesley Hardin killed a popular local Deputy Sheriff named Charles Webb. Hardin fled, but his brother, and two cousins who lived nearby were hung by a local lynch mob... each had minor warrants but were not involved in the death of the Deputy. Talk about guilt by association!

Hardin claimed to have killed 42 men, his first at the tender age of 15. So mean, he once killed a man just for snoring. He was arrested by Texas Rangers and spent 17 years in state prison where he studied a completely different way of stealing... he studied to be a lawyer.

Hardin was the baddest of the bad. His life ended quickly in an El Paso saloon with a bullet in the back of the head from John Selman's pistol... and three more just for good measure. In 2002, the bullet that killed him was auctioned for $80,000.

Oddly enough, most accounts say he was very much a gentleman...

Lots of fascinating characters in the old west... which ones do you guys find interesting???

Wyatt Earp ... firstly for making it through to old age because that was'nt easy to do ... he had a lot of deliberate concentration to never be caught out with his back to the wrong people ... secondly for his choice of pistol ... the long barrel Colt Buntline ... not a speed draw pistol but one which emphasises that you take the pistol out when your instincts tell you to and you aim deliberately to end the conflict ... it all says he was "cool under fire" and when in the presence of danger he was a "thinker" ... he was ahead of the game and that kept him alive ... he might crack a few heads to enforce the law but it makes sense to put someone down quick if there are others who need attention ... he epitomises for me what it takes to live through armed conflict and not be ashamed of what you have done ... he was'nt a back shooter ... and he finished trouble rather than started it ...

Yosemite Sam

He's the meanest, toughest, rip-roarin'-est, Edward Everett Horton-est hombre what ever packed a six-shooter.

That would be My Mother Who was Born right there in Comanche in 1927 and Grew up to be a Doctor.

In my old age, as I learn more History, She is kind of turning into my Hero.

Fictional: The Outlaw Josey Wales (Clint Eastwood) I personally think Clint Eastwood epitomizes western flicks with his characters.

Real Life: Wyatt Earp/Buffalo Bill Cody its a tie for me. Wyatt Earp the law man/family man, Buffalo Bill american hero, and showman.

Anyone who used a Smith and Wesson top break, which I beleive John W. Hardin did.

When it comes to the movies though, I am partial to Clint Eastwood.
