There is an Extreme Survival Blade challenge going on in W&SS. Makers are still hard at work trying to devise a blade to survive a gauntlet of the most ridiculous tasks you could imagine. This is just good clean fun and the guys involved are well aware that their blades are going to see some serious abuse.

We are also trying to be creative with the tasks.... no vices, cheater bars, 2x4's, manilla rope, or hanging pigs.... lol. The idea is to come up with some survival scenarios(however unlikely) to put these blades to the test.

Some folks see this type of thing as completely assinine..... Well, all I can say is, THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT!

I am looking forward to it. Here is my entry piece...

L-6 (RDS) from Aldo
.280" thick
15.75" OA length
9.5" Cutting edge
6" Handle
Shallow convex, almost flat ground.
Cold chisel tip
Sharpened "choil" notch for striking ferro rods, scraping arrow shafts, etc
Hardened pommel plate(5160) for bashing stuff or batoning the knife "chisel-style" using the tip geometry
Handle is leather backed, hemp wrapped and epoxy soaked.

Your stuff is really starting to grow on me. I really like the tip of that blade.

Wow. That's one heck of a tool. I'm thinking you could enter it in "Amazon Apocalypse" categories too. Movies, TV... gotta look at the royalties possibilities here. :)

Not that I'm anybody - but, I APPROVE! You really tied all the visual elements in this one together perfectly. Love the big a$$ tang peined over the buttcap. Exceptional workmanship. Wow.

You know that these types of blades aren't my thing, even though I'm an avid outdoorsman myself. However, the attention to function, and thoughtfulness of each feature Rick, is really great.

This is the first "choil" with justifiable existance, since I've never bought the "for delineation during sharpening" arguement.

Love the chisel tip with an adequate pomel.

I will say though, that I feel this could be 3/16 thick and still survive any real world, even moderately insane scenario. ;)

Awesome piece!

Thanks guys. I do tend to make more robust type blades but this one is over-the-top, even for a caveman like me. I tried to nail the heat treat and was already breaking bricks with it beside the shop the other day. You can't help but have a poop-eating grin when you pick up something like this.... even if it's not your thing.

Nice Rick. My tastes would require that the tip be asymmetrical for true prying and actual digging....Nice.

Rick I would love to see you(or anybody) flip fried-eggs in a skillet with that blade. Extreme Wilderness Spatula:D;)

Crap... I hope that's not one of the tests... I would have gone with Broe's suggestion of the single beveled chisel for flipping eggs or cakes!

I bet Rick's example could do that. Maybe not over-easy, but surely scrambled.

Rock on, bro!
