Jerry's explanation above adds much validity to the mindset that custom knives are not just designed to be "pretty". Much thought in regard to function and performance go into all components to ensure the piece is more than just a pretty "art object" to hang on a wall.

Kevin, I agree. I was visiting with Lin (Rhea) earlier in the week and was discussing knife designs and had never heard of a San Francisco style knife before Lin mentioned it. These guys know knife design and history. I think the general public seems to forget that some these guys are indeed experts.

Personally, knowledge of the design and construction of the knife leads to a better appreciation of the knife, and the maker.

Lin, I do see what you mean about the centerline and the handle.

Nice photos guys....I'm getting some ideas.

Thanks,
Bob

Reading through this thread made me think that the San Francisco makers of the mid 1800's pretty much set the standard for the spear point design and here we have modern evidence of that:thumbup:

Thanks Roger. I love spear points, and any of the California knives..Here is another....

I was curious as to why such a good blade design is seldom used? I'd like to see some photos, or hear any input to advantages/disadvantages of the spear point blade.

I'd think the performance characteristics would depend largely on too many details to make sweeping statements about a blade profile shape.

I still like the looks of the "Rio Grande Camp Knife" type spearpoints, but am less enamored with using them now. I have a (full sized) bowie with such a blade, and didn't like the way it penetrated in thrusts. Actually, more like the way it didn't penetrate, despite having a sharpened false edge. Just too blunt for my tastes. I don't have a picture of that one, but in style it's pretty similar to the bottom one in this old picture, except perhaps just slightly more obtuse:
