there is a thrift store down the street from my house. and the other day I picked up some old spoons for 5 cents each. I then put them on the arbor press and flattened them out. (shiv) I then ground them down with an angle grinder to get a nice point. it's great because they have a nice tang to work with. check em out.

pretty good idea, but the main problem i see is that spoons are made from soft metal, so they won't be too sturdy when stabbing or poking things.

good rehersal though for a survival situation, and good use of odd materials for improvised tools.

cool idea bro!! i be they'd be solid enough for flesh... if they don't work you could always use them to serve mini pieces of pie. LOL

Throw a few barbs on and the soft metal wouldn't be an issue for getting fish. On anything larger or with a hard surface behind, you'd probably have to reshape after each use.

I think this project more inspired out of being bored and at home to long. I have a fractured hip so I can't do much. I really don't think these would be great for long term use. I do think they will go through skin at least once.

I picked up some 40d nails to try out as spear heads. I don't plan on throwing my spear, so I don't want any barbs. But I'm pretty sure these nails won't bend much, even if I do throw the spear and it accidentally a rock. I can't find my verniers, but they are ~0.25" in diameter.

Oh Man, this reminds me of something that happened when I was a kid. I took a old pitch fork handle and drilled a hole in the end. I tapped a big spike into the hole then sawed the head off and sharpened it up on the old peddle grinder. I was throwing it at the wind break by the barn and one of my throws went over the windbreak. I went around to pick it up and was horrified to see the home made spear sticking in the head of one of the milk cows. My dad had recently sawed her horns off and the spear stuck right into the flat spot left where the horn was. The blood was spraying three feet out of her head. She shook her head several times and finally whiped it loose. When my dad came home and saw the blood all over the cows head and neck, he warmed up my rear end pretty good. The old cow came out of it better than I did.;)

You should have said you trying to make strawberry milk LOL

You could spray paint the pointed spoons flat black and wrap the handles in paracord. Then sell them at the Mall as "Tactical Survival Spoons". :D

Are you sticking to this story?

the harpoon from drill bits site isnt working for me, anyone else having trouble with it?

I'm sorry about this, the MySQL on my server, the software that stores data for sites that have users is currently down. This is usually fixed within a day. The original article is in Spanish, but the photos are self-explanatory. Anyone who doesn't want to wait can look it up in the survival section of the Spanish forum Armas Blancas: http://armasblancas.mforos.com/933171/4203743-sabeis-identificarme-esto/ It is posted by Zorro.

My 5" long 40d nails cost me 16 cents a piece. I can use them more or less without modification, or I can flatten the point on an anvil and sharpen it up with a file. It won't look as nice as the drill bit harpoon tip, but it is a lot cheaper.:) Also they are large enough to be useful as tools in their own right, e.g. awl, drill tip, pressure flaker, wood/bone groover, etc.. You could even use it as a nail. I kind of agree with the concept that everything, or as many things as possible, in a PSK/BOB should be multipurpose and robust.

BTW, I really think that drill bit is some nice looking work.
