Spear Vala (Smatchet)

You guys must remember how hard it is to get the kamis to make things exactly as we call them...:D
So the design will probably be as pictured.... just smaller and lighter.

Who was it that posted the pics of his awesome new Bowie the other day? Was that Jake? He was going to cold blue it IIRC.

Find the Kami who made that one, show him a picture of this new design, and say "this type of blade, in this shape" and he'd kick butt.

I love the style but as you point out this one is too thick and too heavy, and would only possibly be useful for a mahout looking to poke his elephant along. ;)

I would shoot for 14-15" and about 28-30 oz. This style of blade will balance better than a kukri of similar length and weight, but I still wouldn't go over 30 oz.

I originally was going to say to go for a "step up" on the leather, but this sheath in the sample looks very neatly stitched. I might change the hanger, but the leather looks good.

I think the point of this knife is to be a bit of a brute... I mean its called the "smatchet" for crying out loud

I would be interested if it turned out to be the one on the top.

Yep, Norm. The Tirtha bowie is mine:D

That reminds me that I vote Tirtha gets the job of this one. His eye for design as well as his skill of execution is incredible. I still can't believe how even the edge is on my Bowie. Even the grinds of the clip are pretty much perfectly equal on both sides. If any kami can think outside of the box, it's Tirtha. I haven't been this wowed by one of the new guys in a long time.

Ahhh damn it, I just realised that double edged knives are illegal to import in Australia...

What if someone skilled with a grinder donated their time to make it a single edge? Not me. I have neither a good grinder nor the skill, but surely there is a good guy poking around the forums to make sure an Aussie brother can get his hands on something he wants, right?

I'd take one, but would be even more interested if the blade were narrower and lighter. Oh, and a villager model!:thumbup:

Andy

I like the idea of narrower and longer. If price is right I am in. maybe 17" same weight.

I think the blade needs to be narrower, it reminds me of an engorged tick as is.

hmm a pommel ring would be nice, reminicent of the coldsteel throwing knife, might help with balance

can't buy it either dang

Oddly though some other H.I. pics came up and B.C. molins avatar came up....

I checked by tape measure and at 14" this run will still be quite a substantial knife and will be a tad lighter also.

I take this as a sign that I am meant to have one! :D

Count me in as a "Yes Please!" :)

Leo, if it comes in over 16inches blade length, we can call it a short sword.

Historically, the kamis opt to make new designs about three times heavier than they need be. Used to drive Bill Martino nuts.

The smatchet is basically a knife, not a three pound axe. 16 inches ought to weigh in under 30 oz with rat-tail tang, possibly in the low 20oz range.

Best wishes in fighting the good fight to get it to a usable weight. :)

I think i'm beginning to understand how he felt somwhat, kis.
We will see if my head explodes when they get here.
I've been pondering telling Auntie to just make them 12 inches, so that they might come in at a useable length and weight. :grumpy: :D

If they do come in at 3x the weight that they should be, you could always afix them to a hickory shaft and use it as a hatchet smatchet

If they have not been ordered, I was wondering if they might be ordered as chiruwa style handle. Reason for me is that for a "tool" like that I would like the option to use the pommel as part of the tool.

That idea would help out Leo and the other Aussie's as double sides spears are legal imports just as are double sided swords with a blade length longer than 300mm/12inches! ;)
