Spears

Hunting boar with a Bowie isn't too bad, depending on the knife you use. . .

Real men use the 14" version :p :D

Those big bowies are things of beauty. I have been packing my 14" version on my hip the last couple of days. Practical, no. Fun, yes:)

I really like the look of the HI survival knife.

I used my Bushman on a stick to get a hog once. I've posted this picture before sorry...

Best wishes from New Zealand.... Coote.

Coote, nice. Here in GA, we're blessed/cursed with hogs that hit 500+ pounds on a regular basis. Less than 20 years ago, a big GA hog was half that size.
Yours looks like a perfect meat hog. That's the size I'm after. Wouldn't mind having a big 700 pounder with huge tusks, but I'm in it for food, not trophies. Nothing against trophies, I just can't see myself spending a chunk of money to have one mounted.
I may have to break down and get a CS Boar spear.
It's good to know that my Bushman really would work as a pig sticker, if needed.

I sure don't see myself going after piggies wearing shorts, though. You get the award for the biggest ballz.

Hey Jaymo

Well I do wear shorts quite a bit, but my ballz aren't particularly huge.... either literally or metaphorically. Big enough I guess. I have to admit now that this particular hog was caught in a rope snare when I speared it.

I still had to be careful.... and the danged thing had plenty of rope to run round with.

This particular animal was one of a few that moved on to a neighbors farm quite close to a populated area. While I had permission to use a gun there, I felt a bit uneasy about always walking around with one seeing that there was a public walking track on the property.

I'd tried to get the pigs with a gun. I went up at night with a spotlight. I could hear them crashing in the scrub just a few feet away, but I couldn't see them. We even organized some dogs, but they couldn't get on to them. But I knew they were there.

So I set a few primitive rope snares in likely places, and threw a few apples around nearby. It was very exciting to hear something crashing around in the scrub as I walked up the track to check my snares that evening.

The snare was just a rope with a simple fixed eye.... probably just a bowline or maybe a simple overhand loop. Cant remember now. I don't like using a locking eye because I figure if an animal brakes the tether it could soon shake off the snare and not have to wear it for life.

That was the first pig I ever snared. I've had several more since then.

Good eating pigs are what I want too. It is exciting to tangle with a big one and it is fun to enthuse about it with your buddies.... but if the pork is rank and tough it is just a waste. I certainly don't like to serve awful pork to my friends and family because I want them to keep encouraging me to go hunting. Although I seldom get a wild hog with any fat on it, some of them are tender and delicious. But you can also get one that looks the right size that can be tough and foul.

Nice work mate; bush pig :D all we have here is the occasional fox and wild deer in the royal nasho.

I'd probably use my bow on game though; abit too close for my taste

MRL has a dozen spears that are all usable, if less than HI-tough.. I don't mean to lower anybody's standards, but it really doesn't take that much to kill a pig from stabbin' distance.
