OK, show us what's in yours.
I just carry a DMT diafold and small ceramic rod in mine. I'm looking for some good ideas on what to overpack this thing with. I know you guys wopn't let me down. ;)

How's this to start off:

I usually just keep my Leatherman Wave in mine. It fits snugly. I would love it if the sheath pouch were a bit larger!

All the best,

- Mike

anymore? I am curious as to folks set ups also. I have been considering picking one up for a 8inch Laconico I picked up.

The top picture has regular green paracord and a good amount of it wound around the sheath and then down through the holes, down each side of the sheath and then secured by a cord lock. Then there is brown faux paracord that has been "braided" for use with a fire bow and drill or other such uses where you need a bit more traction or strength, etc.

The 2nd pic is B&W, was playing around for a book in the future, and you see what goes over the pouch when it is zipped, buckled and secured, a Humelbaugh Sling made out of nylon and paracord and this one is cut down a little bit for more control and for a better fit on this sheath.

Pic three just shows that all the stuff will actually fit in that expando pouch.

Pic four has the basic contents:

Katadyn tablets at the top, below and slightly to the right a good old FRAASS Metal Match, the compass is a Waltham button compass made in the 60s out of an SRU-16P SKIT, the brass snare wire is wound around a USAF/USGI "Emergency Fishing Kit" which is a lot of monofilament line and two long shank fishing hooks. EZE-LAP sharpening "Pen," signal mirror with paddle, short, fat tube is 1/2 cottonball and 1/2 #0000 Steel Wool, longer, thinner tube is a complete and better emergency fishing kit with Life-Like Lures, Eagle Claw small hooks, splitshot sinkers, braided nylon line and eye screws. ACR whistle and a condominium. :D

Things that have changed: Old Waltham I am going to retire probably or trade it off to a collector and replace it with a Suunto Clipper, the FRAASS Metal Match has been replaced by a BSA Hot Spark because the BSA job is quite a bit smaller, added a small Douk-Douk and they are so flat it's easy to do.

Thanks for the feedback so far.

Foxyrick, is that a NMSFNO? I have been looking for one and was wondering if it would fit the specops sheath

Can't speak for Foxy, but those look like Fusion handles, likely some Fusion Steel Heart variant.
In the Busse forum, they mentioned the NMSFNO will fit a long Combat Master sheath. Since the survival sheath is the same size, it should fit. The plastic liner is tight on such a thick knife, but guys that have done it said it's easy to remove the liner, put the knife in, and gently heat it with a blow dryer or heat gun and reform it a bit.

Care to explain the contents of the kit?
Nice to see I'm not the only one who has a Green Hellrazor residing in a survival sheath!

Thanks for the post and details Don.

Here's where I look like a dum-dum. . .Can you really DO anything with those little fishing kits?

Sorry - I missed the thread bubbling up again and didn't see your question until now.

Cpl Punishment is correct, it's not a NMSFNO, it's an HHFSH (Heavy Heart Fusion Steel Heart).

The two knives are very similar in size though so I would imagine that the NMSFNO would fit similarly, maybe a touch easier. The HH is a very tight fit and I had to cut out the spine side of the plastic insert. The NMSFNO might (just!) fit by softening the kydex without cutting it. I soften the kydex in the oven at 150 Celcius for a few minutes.

If you check out my posts somewhere in the thread linked below, there are links to fitting the HH in the sheath (so you see what I mean about the fit) and comparison pictures of my HH and NMSFNO. Don't want to repost it all here and hijack the thread.

Thanks for the reply. I like that HHFSH might have to give some thought to that as well.

Too many awesome blades out there and not enough money:)

Absolutely! You have to put aside all you have viewed on the Bassmasters shows on TNN, etc. You have to lower your expectations, you're looking for food. You're probably not going to throw away anything, size and legality doesn't matter. That's just for starters.

Monofilament line is only good in two instances, when you have a way to actually manage it, i.e., a reel or something similar to a reel, and for leaders. Dealing with monofilament line as your primary source of fishing line is a total pain in the ass. Use braided nylon line and use monofilament for leaders.

Small flies, constructed out of real or synthetic feathers and other materials are fine. They weigh nothing and take up no space. Better than that are "Life-Like Lures." Do not waste your time on frogs, mice and crawdads, you really need a rod for them, they're not small, either. Instead, purchase the small ants, crickets, grasshoppers and flies that actually look like houseflies, etc. You can get a few lines out with these on top of the water and you will catch fish if the fish are feeding on bugs on top of the water. Look for them feeding on top and cast there.

For bait rigs, use small Eagle Claw Brand hooks. Small hooks catch small, medium and large fish. It is hard to catch a small fish on a large hook, but you can catch an extremely large fish on a small hook at times. Use small lead splitshot sinkers.

These kits are also good for catching birds and perhaps other mammals as well as tying a line off on a pole and going for frogs by dangling the "flies" over the frog, they tongue'em and you have a frog with a hook in its mouth, frog legs over a fire.

I have done all of this with the exception of getting regular mammals, I was too busy wacking them out with a slingshot in years past. All of the fishing stuff works. Lowered expectations, non-television expectations coupled with the reality that you will eat very small fish if you are hungry and be very glad to have them along with a careful selection of smaller gear as outlined will lead to a lot of success. If you go out with the accessories that are more geared towards rod and reel fishing, you are usually going to get mixed results at best and poor to failure at the worst.

Cpl,

I love the HR! The outside of the sheath has little roll of duct tape and photon microlight. The pouch carries the following;

Lighter
Leatherman Micra
Big ass fire steel with clear plastic tube cover
Sewing kit
Cordage -60#
Gerber Sharpener
Cotton balls with PJ in a piece of glad wrap
Condom (Hey, you never know...)
Micropur tabs
Tool logic - this thing has a bunch of features and it fit..

Never realized you could pack so much in the Spec-Ops sheaths.

I'm excited to see what I can fit into my kit when my Survival sheath gets here

my ranger rattles around in mine badly. i do not like it. any recommendations? sorry for the hijack.

ryan

Send the knife and sheath to someone who makes Kydex and have them make a real Kydex sheath for the knife that will fit into the nylon outer shell of the sheath.
