Update:
First off, thanks to all of you who took time to respond. I value all of the posts. I have kept these suggestions for future gift ideas
I gave him a Kershaw Shallot Damascus Assisted Opening Folding Knife for everyday and a Spyderco 40th Anniversary Native 5 Sprint Run Folding Knife for the special. I thought he wouldnt like the blade width of the Spyderco or I would have bought the Delica. I went with Damascus, only because this was one of those big birthdays ending in zero.
He loves his knives! Interestingly, he likes the Spyderco alot. He thought the blade size would be very useful. He also appreciated that both knives are very lightweight and had a very snug, yet smooth clip. I was also taken aback that he liked the "assisted opening" of the Kershaw. He said its easy to open one handed.
So yes, you nailed it! He's a practical user and I'm glad you guys were able to help me pick out something that both functional and beautiful.
Carry on!!!
