Special Forces Combat Shovels- by Cold Steel no less.

I hate CS's marketing as much as anyone but some of their tools including this one are very good. It was the Spetznaz soldiers who decided to use the USSR issue spade as a weapon and threw it as well. This is one of the few weapons from CS that is actually based mostly in fact. Where I live a machete is pretty use less but the CS shovel is quite handy and has a serious advantage of not looking like a weapon. Especially in a trunk with a tow strap, jumper cables and other winter gear. It is way better than any folding shovel except the German one and the German one was designed by the same guy who did the Tiger tank.

You do have to be really careful digging your car out of a snowbank though. I came frighteningly close to slicing through an expensive Z rated tire on my Civic.

In places like the UK where weapons are considered worse than child porn something like this in your cars boot(thats what they call a trunk over there) can theoretivcally save your life.

Cliff Stamp has an article on his site about using the shovel.

I am also fond of the CS Norse hawk. I stripped all the paint ,blued it and fixed the edge but really it was a very nice tool for the money. Even the handle was top notch straight grain hickory.

I had the same thought about the fat guy tucking into those ribs. I even kept an eye out for a barbeque in the background.

I really like this shovel. I keep it in my car for SHTF situations. The shovel is still carried and used by Russian special forces.
It can be a great tool if you train with it, and it is very inconspicious. i live in a country where regular routine police stops and searches are performed on vehicles to find contraband, drugs and weapons. They also check drivers for DUI and to see if all necessary documents are in order.
If they find anything that resembles an object intended to be used as a weapon you are in big trouble.
Only tools are explainable.
Fred Perrin, not a nobody IMHO, likes his shovel as well.

The U.S. armed forces used a similar shovel in the Korean war.
