Speculation on the current straight handle market

Then what the. f...I mean, where along in production is my machete' we have been working on since July of 2001 if you haven't left the shop?

"20 hrs OT less/week than this time last year"

How about NO overtime last year and less in on the books for this year.

"It's the economy that's causing this."
As one who buy's....that pretty much sums it up.

"it's a buyers market, good deals and they will go back up in price."
This is good advice...BUY them now...they will go back up!

Jerry told me the other day, that due to dificulties in making your machete and the 1000 hours of overtime on your machete alone, the final price will be $3,000 per inch. How does a 3 inch machete sound now:D

AND the price is going up! it takes five guys to hold it against the grinding wheel, they all need paid.
i heard it has to be shipped by ground cause it won't fit in the plane. probably have to go by rail or sumpthin:confused:

Dear crack baby Jerry,

Let me clarify my statement. To my eyes and maybe they are blind (I did see the pics of skunk dancing), it seemed that your custom production went into high gear in the late part of 2001. I'm sure you never stopped doing custom pieces, however even you have to admit the volume of custom pieces picked up by leaps and bounds right around the 2001 NYC show. From that time forward seems to be a whole new era in custom knives from early times.

Do you disagree? Seriously? You always tell me I'm F****** up, but if I'm way out there please let me know my view of the Custom Shop's history is skewed.

Thanks, Jerry.

X-Head:

"...the Fusion models, which everyone seems to like better than any other Busse handle design so far...."

Not me. I prefer the e-handles, and the new "Special Forces" handle is the handle design I like best, so far. I don't mean this to be negative about the Fusion handle; I'm just saying that the Special Forces handle fits my own hands and my own needs better.

Dear "Dark Crack Baby",

Yes, you are blind. . . sort of . . . after all you are a Lemur . . . . so it is to be understood.

Yes, your view is "skewed". . . your view is "screwed". . . your view is "tatooed"! :D

We will be on the same page in Vegas after much drinking and another all nighter that involves a game of "Where the heck is my dog tag?". ;)

Chuck,

Wait until you see the custom sword that I'm finishing right now! The order for it came in 3 years before your machete. . . . Besides, this is the second time I've made your machete. . . I'm still a little trigger shy. . . . I should have it finished in about 3 years! Just think of the increase in value! ;)

Could be that buying me all the booze I can handle in Vegas might get that "baddest of all machetes" shoved to the front!!!! See ya there!!!! ;)

that sword doesn't happen to be the

GREAT LEMUR SLAYER!

that was ordered during the great lemur wars of 2000:eek:

i always wondered when that crimson edged beast would emerge:eek:

Man, I really had hope for this thread. I'd read almost half of it before I got blamed for something, and then when I do get blamed it's from 2 people. It sucks being me ;):p

:D:D

Eric: yes, you did get blamed for something or other pretty quick. You have to admit, you're a handy fellow to have around whenever there's any blame to go around. ;)

Evolute: I got to handle the new line at Blade '03, and I really liked the SF handles myself, although I favor the Fusion. I have to admit, I never was a big fan of the Ergos, but they did grow on me after a while. They were plenty comfortable, just didn't have the aesthetics to me.

While I believe the new Busse line has had some downward influence on the price of the older models, I feel by far the main factor is the economy. Here are just a couple of examples:
- A computer technician recently told me he has not had a raise in 2 years due to a salary freeze.
- My neighbor who worked for a large company had his job outsourced, and guess what - he was brought back as a contractor to do his old job, but for less pay and benefits! Less than a year ago the company where I work did the exact same thing with several thousand employees. While these people are not unemployed (so in other words they do not show up in the statistics), they have a lot less disposable income than they did before.

While the stock market has made a nice recovery, the job market is not as rosy! Yes, I realize that jobs are a "lagging" economic indicator and that the employment picture will improve, but some people who either lost jobs or were forced to take a huge pay cut will never recover the money they lost (like my neighbor who is over 50 and is 10 years or less away from retirement).

It is not just older Busses that are affected; I have seen other knife brands, even fairly popular models, sell (or not sell) for what seems like an unusually low price. When you have less income, most people have less money to spend on items like knives.

Then I stand corrected, it sure isn't the first time.
