has anyone here ever tried emulating the ken onion speedsafe mechanism in their custom knives?

I'm sure Ken Onion has a patent on the "Speed Safe" mechanism, so any maker can't just copy his mechanism.
However, if you are asking if any other makers make assisted opening folders, Darrel Ralph makes knives with the ROBO power system designed by Bill Taylor. That is very similar to the Onion Speed Safe design.

Actually, Kershaw owns the patents.
It is too expensive for most makers to get and more importantly defend the patents.
