I'm just a teenager, so $60 is a lot of money. I'm not looking for anything specific, fixed or folder, EDC or survival. I just want a lot of bang for my buck. (Not a Buck reference) Help me out. Thanks in advance!

And, I'm also new on Bladeforums, so take it easy on me.

teenager + $60? ....

ohhh, something knife related? since you werent specific with a need/want... i say save the $60 for something you cant afford at the moment or the near future ;)

welcome to bladeforums :)

I had a bad experience with a delica 4. I took it apart and put it back together and it now closes with very light spine whacks.

The Buck Vantage Pro (with a S30V blade) is not a bad way to spend that money on a knife...

I like the HK/Benchmade Conspiracy folder in that price range. Or the Ontario Utilitac. You can get a Kershaw JYD 2 with a composite blade under $70.

I'd say pick up something with a drop point blade in AUS-8 or ATS-34 8cr13mov 12c27 etc, with a plain edge- neumerous Kershaws/bucks/sog/CRKT/kbar come to mind. I wouldn't spend a penny over $40 on the knife, and I'd put the remainder into a sharpening set up- the cheap and easy kind- sandpaper/mousepad and a strop.

You'll be much better off getting a basic knife and learning to take care of it, than focusing on the minute details of this steel vs that, or blade shapes or lock types or where it's made, in the beginning. Any basic knife from a reputable company (b/c heat treatment, tolerances & QC matter) that you learn to sharpen will serve you well.

Oh I'd definately recomend a folder eith about a 3-3 1/2" blade- it'll do anything you ought to be doing with a basic knife, and it's far easier to carry in general

good luck and welcome to the forum

You might be able to score a Case Sodbuster Jr. And a Becker Necker for $60, or just a hair over. That combo would last you a lifetime, and do anything you could reasonable ask of a small knife. The Necker will even baton with the best of 'em.

I say a RAT 1 --Junglee Tri Van-- Cold Steel Voyager or G.I. Tanto and have some cash left for some...beverage!!!

Really good advice. As others have said, any basic knife from the major companies will be a good start with a useful tool.

But Sal Glesser made the Sharpmaker before he made Spyderco knives. Drop in on Maintenance, Tinkering & Embellishment at http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php/794-Maintenance-Tinkering-amp-Embellishment and learn a few things about sharpening before you choose a knife. That way you can maintain or improve whatever knife you buy.

You might be able to pick up a benchmade knife on the exchange forums if you shop around.

A seller may or may not ship if he's under 18. Anyways I agree with the above. Get something like a tenacious. There's a ton of color choices with the sprints out :)

The Vantage Pro is a good price for the steel, but you won't have anything to maintain the edge ( no more $$$). I'd recommend something with a cheaper steel (aus-8 or 8cr13mov) and then a sharpening system for it.

When you say you're not looking for anything specific, you should sit back and think about what you would use this knife for. Figure out if you want a folder or a fixed blade, because that is important. You don't want to blow $60 and then realize you can't use this knife for the things you want to.

That being said, the Becker BK11 (fixed blade) and the Spyderco Tenacious (folder) would be my two choices. Both great values without breaking the bank.

Oh yea, that is a good point, although if he gets parent permission, he can find himself a knife worth more then $60 and all he will have to spend is that. I have seen mini grips for $50 before.

I was looking into Esee Izulas, but they're kinda pricey for what they are. Steel aside, a BK-14 is a good idea. I'll look into it. Thanks.
