Spent the Last Two Hours with a Reporter

Before there is any confusion again, Leland Johnson Stacy invented the modern dial phone. It is properly called the Selective Station Dial Phone System. It is the system that allows a person to call from their phone to another phone without the need for operators. It was a relay decoding system, and required huge stations of relays. Today a pocket calculator has more processing ability that those old toll bar stations.

The dial phone was invented about 40-50 years earlier, and Bell Labs ( grandfather's employer) licensed the system, but it had several shortcomings - mainly the need for operators. Once the size of the phone system grew to millions of users, the need for a completely automatic, or at least one that was less manual, became clear.
