A friend who I recently turned into an INFI addict, custom made this for a Sage/Olive Drab G-10 handled ASH-1 I just picked up (not the knife in the photo). He does great work and that is a titanium bead. Anyone interested hit me up:

No doubt, I never noticed much of a difference in lanyards until I saw the ones he is making. He uses TAD paracord, which is better looking than normal 550 paracord and that titanium bead is very subtle but classy looking. I think you also have to have an eye for it. Making the lanyard the right size for the knife in question takes a certain talent. Hes an art major so he should have talent.

That is very nice work. I have a few questions, anyone feel free to help out. 1) I think that is a fob and not a lanyard. 2) What purpose does that thing serve? It does not seem to help one retain the knife once it is in the hand, so is it purely to locate the knife, pull it out of a bag, or decorative? I understand the cord can be used if cord is needed. 3) If it were a lanyard, must the lanyard be of a particular length to be useful, i.e. to wrap it around the wrist or hand, and what exactly is the proper way to use a lanyard?

There, I think those are my questions. Finally, I think that is beautiful work, best fob I've seen, actually. If I decide I can use of those things, I would definitely buy his.

Hey Vance, thats not the one! LOL. The one I got from you had magnum g-10's, the knife pictured has flat micarta handles. Great knife as well though.

Yep, foxyrick, that looks like a utilitarian lanyard. My questions are serious though, I'm not meaning to bring any disrespect to the fob in question. I have always wondered what the utility of these fob-type things are, or if they they are mostly decorative. If I can understand the use, I may be inclined to buy some of these, as that is the prettiest one I've seen anywhere.

I know what you mean. Personally I find they (fobs and lanyards) catch on anything and everything while sheathed and often just get in the way in use. I do have a couple of knives that sit deeply and tightly in their sheaths where the fob is actually useful to get them out. I still prefer not to have one even then.

I occasionally make use of lanyards on my bigger choppers, but even then they irritate me if not in use.

I've always assumed fobs are just for looks, and possibly extra cord, rather than any real practical use. I would be interested in being shown otherwise.

I do think they look 'cool' though, and have made a few in the past for my knives that don't go out much.

I find a short lanyard or fob to be useful. If you are wearing an IWB rig or use a pocket sheath it is useful for pulling the knife. You can also hang the knife on a hook by the lanyard. I think there are myriad uses for long and short lanyards, though I guess they could get caught on things if you're careless.

Hello all,
First post on B. F. I started making those lanyards/fobs to make some dime to aquire more infi and a trijicon. They sell pretty quick on Ebay. I dont think they would have much functional use. More of an asthetics thing. You would want an intact simple knotted piece of paracord with the inner core fibers intact. With the core fibers removed wouldnt think to be strong enough or safe for any type of hard use! I am willing to sell them-just a basic member though. dont think I can sell yet on site!
Cheers!

Skwurll has arrived! I think there is some functionality with these as far as being able to quickly pull the knife out of a sheath, maybe more so with a folder, as I notice its much easier to get my SNG out of my pocket with a little fob on it.

The second thing I think they provide is a ,bright orange fob for instance, will increase the visibility of the knife. Say when camping, it can be easy to lose given the tactical camo of these knives. Throw a little tritium skull on there and you can find it in the dark as well.

And lastly, they are decorative. For what thats worth. :o

I sent you a PM Bill. mfaster, since foxy said "Personally I find they (fobs and lanyards) catch on anything and everything while sheathed and often just get in the way in use" think he took your comment to mean that you're saying he's careless.

I was not making a personal comment at all. I was just saying if one was careless. I was actually thinking of my own missteps. Sorry if my comment was mis construed. I meant nothing personal at all

No sorry needed - it just made me laugh!

My wife says that I as so clumsy I can trip over a level floor, so there must be something in it, lol.

Nice looking fobs! To each his/her own..... I like them for display knives and on my keychains.
