Personally I find they (fobs and lanyards) catch on anything and everything while sheathed and often just get in the way in use... I occasionally make use of lanyards on my bigger choppers, but even then they irritate me if not in use.
The non-snagging lanyard tutorial shows how to reduce the tendency to catch on protrusions as you walk past them with closed-loop lanyards. The hand-wrap is the same as the Lofty Wiseman method shown in the thread linked earlier.
I was looking at a forest yesterday (thinking of buying) and had to fight my way up a supposed '4wd track' that was so overgrown with brambles as to be nearly jungle-grade. Clearly hadn't been used in years. They were catching and ripping on everything; my hands and legs are scratched to pieces!
Fortunately I had my old HR with me - something quick enough to take out the springy little suckers! It made me think of this thread especially as my HR has a lanyard - it came with one and I never took it off. I did use it though.
Took a good hour though to make a few hundred yards. Could have done with a light machete really; trying to get the FBM going at the speed needed for the stuff was just too tiring (and a bit risky!)
Edit: That looks a good method - I'll give it a go. I've got a bunch of washer somewhere around here somewhere... Thanks again for the link!
