Anyone know what kind of spider this is? Also where do i stay away from to ensure i never see one walking around!

It's a regular old Banana Spider...or, more correctly, the Golden Orb Spider. It's also the less poisonous of the two spiders named Golden Orb.

Dude, don't invite me down to your place without atleast the .45 !! That things deserves a wide birth !!

Banana spiders are way too common around here. I've had those bastards crawing on me more than a few times before. That is some unsettling sh!t to say the least. Where I lived as a kid, up in Royston, GA there has always been a very serious scorpion problem. Between those, the fiddlebacks, the widows, horned spiders, bananas, just to name a few, you better check those shoes and boots every time before you put them on. I stuck my foot in a boot one time and felt somethin kinda squiggly in there, pull my foot out, and there was a giant ass banana spider crawling up me and he looked pissed. Freaked me out big time. Once when I was camping in our back field, I woke up with a scorpion on my face. Bastard nailed me before I could get it. Us GA boys have some serious critters to contend with. We get used to 'em though.

Man, that creeps me and I ain't scared of anything.
Where is it you live?
I ain't goin there

I think I'll stay up here in Pa., and deal with the bears and such... The farthest I'll be heading south will be SC(mom lives there), and will be packing the coach, or the .44 atleast, along with my bow...lol

i live a little further north than dylside (in Ga) and i found this on a different website. Now that i know these live in my state i will have to look a little bit more carefully. I am really used to most of the bugs down this way but this one was new to me. The biggest worry i have isn't even the black widow, its the brown recluse we get around where i live.

Even so, the worst thing imho is the freaking fire ants....argh.

I can get used to the big ones, usually not as poisonous and you can see/feel them. It's waking up every morning in Florida and finding you've been snuggling with brown recluses and black widows-that's unsettling.

Yep, banana spider... or at least that what I've always called them. Grew up with those things in North Central Florida... the tensile strength of the webbing they produce is quite amazing. I had one bite me on the palm of my hand when I was younger.... hurt like hell but not poisonous or anything. That being said, I think they're definitely the most dangerous-looking spiders I've ever seen... they just look MEAN!

By the way... those things are absolutely EVERYWHERE in the areas they inhabit. Walking through the woods behind my parents house, I would normally walk through an average of two webs per day, and I would see another 10-12 examples of the species throughout a 3-4 hour hike.

The males are quite small in comparison to the females, and the females actually eat the males after mating.

I'm in same area as you and can verify the horrid effects of a brown recluse bite - and I was one of the lucky ones

It is a golden silk spider
Nephila clavipes

Joe was very lonely at this point in his life. He was looking for love and he didn't consider species differences to be a factor.

These spiders get confused with another type way too often because a lot of people call these by the same name. The two most confused are the Argiope and Nephila. Both are very similar and both are referred to as "the writing spider" and "the banana spider".

Kiddsgames, you're probably used to seeing what they refer to up there as the "Writing spider" Very similar. You should be able to find these suckers everywhere.

You can see how stuff starts to get mingled together.

The female Nephila get HUGE. You'll see both of these spiders misidentified pretty often.

yep, You can check the IDS of these guys by the general shape of the abdomen, and as the name suggests, the color of the brilliant golden silk the spider secretes. The golden Silk spider's silk is extremely strong, and long story short, scientists are trying to emulate it.

The golden silks also have what look like stockier legs due to hair on them, with a distinct change in shape from segment to segment, and have more than two stripes on em. Kiddsgame's spider is indeed a golden silk spider, golden orb weaver, or banana spider (its abdomen looks like a banana). They get confused with the garden spider, or writing spider, like the one above. Either deliver a pretty small bite, less than a bee sting.

I don't know why you guys want a pistol, I'm thinking short barrel tactical shotgun loaded with rock salt or birdshot, hell maybe even buck.

I would prefer no weapons at all. These spiders aren't aggressive at all and if you happen to walk through a giant web in the dark and get one of these on you, try to stay calm and simply remove the spider. I know that sounds hard to do, but believe me, these are good spiders and are good to have around. brown recluses, scorpions, and ticks on the other hand are the devil and should be neutralized on sight. Banana spiders and writing spiders are really beautiful spiders and pretty much never hurt anyone. If you have a dog or cat on your property that might eat it, just snatch it up in a shoebox and relocate it. Same thing if you're just too freaked out about it being around. Either you do it or get someone who isn't afraid of them to get it in something and relocate it. In my experience, I have never seen or heard of a banana or writing spider in someone's house. They like it outside so don't worry about them trying to come in. Just let them hang out and enjoy the cool spider you get to have a close up look at.
