I have been thinking of trying to make bolsters out of SS with a spider web inlayed using copper as the web. I wont to cut about 1/16 deep and TIG weld copper in the SS so what kind of chasing chisels would work?
Thanks JRH

I can't help you with your question, but It sounds like a neat idea. Post pics if you get it worked out.

Why weld it?

Cant you just hammer copper in?

Seems like it would work, with less danger of a mistake.

(I'm ignorant of inlaying methods)

cut in with a dremel tool cutting disc, you'll be Tigging it anyway so don't need the special dovetail undercut like with beaten in inlay.

Thanks for all the replies and i am still working on the process and it seems like it will work but very time instance so-far.
I have a set of bolsters in ss and copper that look nice but it is knot what i am looking for.
Thanks for all the replies JRH.

No welding is required.Using engraving tools you first use a flat graver to cut the channel. Then undercut the channel. Then use a brass punch to hammer the copper into the channel and finish by using flat gravers and stones to smooth the copper flush to the surface. Many good tutorials at The Engravers Cafe and Steve Lindays Hand Engravers Forums.I would suggest using 24k gold wire as copper work hardens easily and tarnishes quickly.
