hey guys where i live piggies are everywhere and i do hunt them

while i have a few buddies who dog hunt pigs with nothing but knives and i was thinking about taking him up on his taking me out and giving it the ol college try and while i love my knives i don't have anything big or nasty enough for doing the job as i have seen more pigs than i can count that were north of 200lbs and i can recall more than once where i would say they were above 250 conservatively and one massed my father up pretty good and he was probably 175-200 though he was a particularly mean SOB i saw him put a couple calf's airborne when they got in his way

now back to the reason for the thread i dont have a knife for it so i got to thinking that i would rather have a hawk cause well there's a reason you split wood with an axe and not with a blade and why the hawk devastated the pilgrims because its bada**

now i was thinking a hawk with a spike on the main blade reminiscent of edwood7's fighting hawk but more optimized for hunting meaning longer handle heavier and a longer? blade for deeper cleaving my rational is dogs stop the boar and i go for the spine and whatever else i can get shot which should get lungs maybe heart although i kinda doubt it then a throat/head/broadside chop to finish him off

now is this just impractical nonsensical thinking or am i on to something throwing is NOT what i am after here

so as you guys are the experts tell me what your thoughts are

thank you for your time and i hope you enjoy the rest of your day

Hey tacdriver22mk2, is this a serious question man? Cause I joke around too much. I never can tell what's what with typing.

Just get an Ontario Old Hickory butcher knife, one of the big ones, and mod the tip into a drop point. It's tough, sharp, and relatively cheap.

Get a Condor Hudson Bay for about $32. It is big and bad. The Condor Varan would also work and cost about $25. The length of the spike on the CS Spike Hawk is one of the longest available and probably would work. For weight and large spike I would possible choose the CS Trench Hawk. There are some really expensive hawks that might be better, but for an average Joe like me, I would look at these.

I would think that a knife has more control in those situations. If the the hog is fairly still, you can get the knife close, then push it in. With a hawk, you have to take a swing, and how's your accuracy? What if the dog moves in mid swing?

I love hawks, and maybe for some it's a good choice, but I'd feel a bit safer around my dog with a spear or knife. I mess around with hawks about every day, with a swinging fence post. I don't always hit what I'm aiming for, and any one of those could kill or seriously injure a dog.

that's a good point i thought i would judge it on a situational basis but that is a good point i guess they use knives for a reason

oh well that's the reason i asked

thanks

You can always get a cold steel assegai spear short staff, it'll give you enough distance and control

Hog hunting with a knife, I think a stabbing weapon is the only choice. Long, thin and pointy. The Old Hick suggestion is not bad, except some sort of guard or finger groove(s) are advisable to keep your hand on the handle and off the blade on a hard stab. dakine's suggestion is also pretty good, though it's technically not a knife if that matters to you. I think it would be my choice.

This thread reminds me of those video clips that start with a guy saying, "Hey guys, watch this," and end with a trip to the emergency room.

In nature experienced predators always pass over any potential meal that has a likelyhood to result in serious injury to the predator. That's why making yourself look a large as possible causes cougars to re-think the situation.

Forget the axe. Take a good brush gun and strap a heavy double action revolver to your hip. Then go home with your hog and not to the hospital.

Sounds crazy, but there are a lot of guys out there hunting hogs with knives for real, you'd be surprised.

The spike on the CS spike hawk would definitely kill a hog in one hit..........

Provided you could hit the brain pan on a hog while it was snarling and snapping at you!!!!

Mighty small target on a moving beast.

you could get a longer handle on the hawk (I have a 24 inch handle, and a longer 34? inch handle which is not mounted).

Their CS Boar spear is ideal. I would also consider using one of their swiss halberds if I could get my hands on one. Big long spear point on top of a huge axe blade and hook would give you a ton of options! But it would be a heavy sucker to lug around!

I have a one of their Pole Axes that would pack a hell of a punch, provided you could hit what you were aiming at. But there is no option for a killing stab with it.

So Tacdriver, what kind of knives do your buddies use for this? (I wouldn't use an axe of any kind either, just to keep this in the right forum.)

Recently i brought along a RMJ Kestrel to a hog hunt. The pictures are too graphic but the spike went straight into the skull ( No L.Thompson pun intended)

if its one thing i have learned about hunting alot of stuff pigs deer birds alligators snakes etc is that there is no "one shot kill" i have had more than one honest and well respected man tell me stories of pigs taking so many 45s out of their 1911s that they dumped 1-3 (depending on the guy and the individual happening) mags and had to reload their mags. now that might not surprise you but these are experienced hunters taking head shots i mean behind the ear in the ear in the eye between the eyes in the neck all kinds of stuff and these pigs just wouldn't die

i have shot fairly small bucks with a 300 wby magnum (WAY large for whitetail where i live when they weigh max of 150 lbs) blown out their right shoulder put a better than fist size hole in BOTH sides of their rib cages and have them run literally miles in swamp one time it took over 28 hours to track this deer down as he was in thigh to happy trail deep water and knee deep mud only to have him still be alive with said holes in him granted no heart shot but i picked up pieces of lung as i blood trailed him

i put 4-5 arrows from a 75lb Mathews bow into a boar hog once and with said arrows in him i chased him 5-8 cow fields only to have him charge and gore me pretty bad he was approx 200+ lbs i have had one shot drops with the same bow arrow broad head shot placement on several similarly sized hogs but he was just that tough an SOB

snakes are even worse

the point is i am very hesitant to just rule things an "instakill"

well they aren't knife guys and most of them use a LOT of fairly large pitties i know one of them likes a buck 119 as crazy as that sounds then again he really is clinically insane or at least he was...

kabars bucks usually something cheap and big

This is why I asked you if you were joking about using the Spike hawk. Of course it would kill it, but it would be a very difficult, small, and big risk target, if your goin after a big tusker boar. Spears are my close kill primitive weapon of choice. If you do it, get it on video. It's gonna be one of the most awesome hog kills ever!

And single-edged, it sounds like.
So a spear or gun isn't really an option if everyone else is using a knife.
I suppose you could take a knife and a spike-hawk and see how the spirit moves you. An Igorot head-axe might be good, if anyone makes one.
The sport must be pretty popular for Cold Steel to come out with a "boarhunter" knife.

Condor has a pig sticker machete for a very reasonable price. I think it would go in one side and out the other. The Cold Steel Bushman Bowie knife mounted on a short shaft would also be awesome.
