if its one thing i have learned about hunting alot of stuff pigs deer birds alligators snakes etc is that there is no "one shot kill" i have had more than one honest and well respected man tell me stories of pigs taking so many 45s out of their 1911s that they dumped 1-3 (depending on the guy and the individual happening) mags and had to reload their mags. now that might not surprise you but these are experienced hunters taking head shots i mean behind the ear in the ear in the eye between the eyes in the neck all kinds of stuff and these pigs just wouldn't die
i have shot fairly small bucks with a 300 wby magnum (WAY large for whitetail where i live when they weigh max of 150 lbs) blown out their right shoulder put a better than fist size hole in BOTH sides of their rib cages and have them run literally miles in swamp one time it took over 28 hours to track this deer down as he was in thigh to happy trail deep water and knee deep mud only to have him still be alive with said holes in him granted no heart shot but i picked up pieces of lung as i blood trailed him
i put 4-5 arrows from a 75lb Mathews bow into a boar hog once and with said arrows in him i chased him 5-8 cow fields only to have him charge and gore me pretty bad he was approx 200+ lbs i have had one shot drops with the same bow arrow broad head shot placement on several similarly sized hogs but he was just that tough an SOB
snakes are even worse
the point is i am very hesitant to just rule things an "instakill"
Thats why I said "Provided you could hit the brain pan on a hog while it was snarling and snapping at you!!!!
Mighty small target on a moving beast."
Livestock used to be killed with a sharp blow to the skull with a funny looking hammer with a round protrusion like a bolt.
Only way I would use an impact weapon like a spike hawk on a pig would be if the sucker was restrained, or hung up and could not gut me.
I just watched a video of a kid poke a boar with a CS boar spear. Every time he got close, the dogs kept jumping away from the boar and it would turn and go for him. Even with a 7 foot spear, he had a tough time getting close enough to poke that boar. I would not want to try it with a hawk either (especially with the dogs they were using, they never tried grab and hold the hog). (and when he got a good stick in, he let go of the spear).
