What is your opinion about reasonable stock thickness at ricasso for each size of bowie?

In my opinion 3/16" is fine for 6-8" blade and 1/4" for anything longer.

I used to follow a similar pattern myself. Nowadays I prefer ~1/4'' for smaller blades (5-8'') and thicker (~5/16'') for longer blades with a drastic distal taper (that applies on both). It may seem excessive but the distal taper makes them really fast in the hand.

Like Tony stated, it’s all in the distal taper....front to back, top to bottom...the more the better to my notion.

I’ve got several large Bowie’s and Choppers with 3/8” spines that are very lively, proper heat-treat is a must...always.
