Spirit of Steel - Best of..

It's almost always in poor taste on any forum when your very first post is to try to sell something. How about participating / contributing for a while first? And then to make the attempted sale a $4.5k stunt like this - talk about not knowing your audience.

But I will say that it was worth it to have another look at that fine bowie and the one Kevin posted as well. Tommy has boatloads of talent.

A very nice knife indeed, but I'm afraid I find the above attempted sale in very poor taste.
Sorry, just felt it needed to be said.

AMEN.

On a much happier note, a pair of knives from Tommy Gann, JS (that I ordered at Blade) just arrived. They are merely spectacular. I will try and post a few images ASAP.

I will assume Captgizmo is new to this forum and to custom knives in general, thus didn't know the rules and/or the true value of the Bowie in question.

So he has obviously been made award of both by now. As I had not seen this Bowie, I'm glad he made the mistake.

I'm wondering if the piece is still "for sale" considering the owner now realizes what he would most likely receive for it.

Spectacular knives and quick service too.

Now that's a great combination if I ever saw one.

Thanks for the education. However.....I do own a Bowie that is work of a spectacular artist. It's not "in bad taste" when someone recognizes talent, workmanship, unbelievable quality and knifes that have been selling way less than they should. If you ever have the opportunity to hold or own one of his knives, you'll see the value of a upcoming knife maker. It's only a matter of time when both of us cannot afford them. It was only my advice.............. buy them while you can!

PS. Thanks again for the education, however, because I'm new to the forum's doesn't imply that I'm new to the knife market.

It's in bad taste to try to sell for $4,500 a knife which is worth at best 1/3 to 1/2 of that based on the current market - the subjective value you think it should have notwithstanding.

It's also in bad taste to try to sell an item as your very first post, without even introducing yourself.

Finally, it's in bad taste to join a forum and not read what the rules are.

With this said, welcome! We're always eager to get more collectors here, and the savvier the better.

I can read what you write, understanding it the way you intended it...not sure.

Introducing myself before making a post....I did not find that in the rules. Not used to "sugar coating" any post. I'll make better proto-call next time so it's not found offensive.

Following the forum rules.... I made a mistake.

Welcome captgizmo, hang around and join the crowd. This is a good place.

Joss's post is pretty straight forward, I read it to mean what it says.

Capt.

Welcome to the Forums....really.

That said, YOU said you don't sugarcoat, neither do I, so strap in....

1. It is in HORRIBLE taste to try and gouge fellow collectors. This is not ebay, we don't like that...we are educated enough to know the difference, and resent the message, either way. I have seen far too many collectors, makers and dealers play the "what I got is gold, and what you got is garbage" game. This was a major gaffe on your part....but we are an accepting and forgiving group here....just sayin'.

2. If you are not new to the knife market, then you know that everything I said above is true, and will take pains to not repeat it.

3. Knife collecting is a full contact sport.:D

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Be careful what you preach Mr. Collector. Sometimes words come back to haunt you!

You say your forgiving.............doesn't sound like it to me.

One minute I'm welcomed in your message, next minute you want to display your character.

I got your point.........

Read on, I noted the mistake.

First of all welcome to Blade Forums. You will eveutually find you are among friends here.

Second, I agree with you in that Tommy's knives are outstanding from a quality, and value standpoint.

And last, perhaps you, us and especially Tommy could have avoided this negative and embarrassing exchange if you would have asked Tommy's advise on the sales price; as you priced your piece three times what Tommy was asking for the exquisite piece below at the Blade Show.

I have found that makers are always willing and even prefer to help collectors set realistic prices for their knives on the secondary market as these prices affect the makers and the prices of their new knives.

Kevin touches upon an important point. One of the things that occured to me when I saw the original "for sale" post is that a less-informed forumnite might look at that number, assume it to be remotely reflective of Tommy's prices and conclude that this maker is priced out of his reach. Not good for Tommy.

In any event, you are most welcome here - please feel free to post more of your knives.

Roger

PS - I'll be placing an order with Tommy soon - just have to make up my mind what I want him to make for me.
