Spirit x Wave

Funny I'm the exact opposite . I hate the new Leatherman drivers and bit holders . I found the premium OH blade to be of little use , as I already carry a dedicated blade with better ergos , and grind .

Although the bit holders at times provide too stubby drivers, the accessory bit extender changes all that. So far, my experience with the bit kit has overall been good. Carrying the Charge has allowed me to dispense with a dedicated blade if I choose to carry light. It's a matter of options, and after all, nothing prevents me from adding a dedicated folder to the daily pocket burden if I want. BTW, I really like the Spirit "butterknife" blade, think it's a good configuration for a multitool, makes a great complement for a dedicated folder. That said, the Charge has two good blades and a gutting hook, all of which provides much versatility in compact form.

Implement quality on the Vic. is superior , better can and bottle openers , better scissors ( tho small ) , and that lovley little chisel/scraper /slitter thing .

Can't agree with you about scissors, the Spirit's don't open wide enough. I can't imagine how much use they would be on anything other than fishing line, threads, or nose hair. Comparing can openers, I tested a Spirit and Charge against each other and found them to work about the same. While the Spirit bottle opener works better, the Charge's multiple purpose unit gets the job done well enough. Because either are implements of convenience rather than dedicated, I don't hold either to high standards so long as I get my beer :D.

Vic build quality is great, Leatherman is good enough. The only thing I have ever done to a Leatherman product that required repair (once) was my fault and would have probably done in a Vic. Implement capability is more important to me than elegant finish, and after experience with both, my choice is Leatherman. My comments are not intended to persuade anyone that one is "better" than another, but to demonstrate how personal a multitool choice can be.

To be honest I think that a lot of folks carry OH Leathermans as a politically correct tactical , that flies below the sheeple radar .

Well, I never thought of it that way, but for those who feel they have the need, why not? I see no reason to draw negative attention if it can be avoided. When it comes to social interactions, I prefer to not scare folks or
piss them off.

I'm a bit unrepresentative as I seldom use multitool drivers for any but the most casual of driving . Within that frame of reference , the vic drivers work fine for me . I always carry a Snap On stubby magnetic hex driver in my pocket plus a small bit wallet . These get the nasty jobs .

Normally, dedicated tools for "serious" purposes are preferable, although sometimes I get into situations where they are not at hand. OTOH, I always have a multitool on my person, and usually it will do the job. Most recently that was yesterday, when during a heavy rain my driver side windshield wiper stopped working (third time in 13 years, different cars ) As soon as possible, I pulled over to the roadside shoulder, tightened the nut holding the wiper, and was on my way. Later, I finished the job properly with a wrench.

Often, my Charge outfit, complete with accessories in a belted nylon sheath, is all the tool kit I can carry for my regular work, which is photography. On location (most of the time), I have so much other stuff to carry there is no room for a real tool kit, but sometimes a light stand or something needs minor repair, usually within the capability of my Charge. Since I work mostly alone, a one hand opening blade is a real convenience when I have to hold a roll of seamless paper in place with one hand while cutting off a length. Used to carry a Delica for that, but the Charge makes that unnecessary. For ordinary EDC, I carry just the Charge by shoestring belt hanger into RF pocket, hardly feel it there.

Frankly, I don't do too many nasty jobs; at least, not requiring tools :D.

My intent is not to be imflamatory , or disrespectfull . Just my 0.02 cents worth .

Can't speculate about how others may react, but I feel no hot flashes or humiliation. :)

I think the pre 2004 Wave was one of the best multi's ever , if I didn't have a Spirit , I would still be rocking one ! For me the Vics. are just better built , and better engineered .

Chris

You say tomato and I say tomatoe. :D

You are an experienced and thoughtfull user , and I value your opinions . It comes down to a Glock Vs. SIG Vs. 1911 type argument . Glad we have the choices . Like you I'm a big fan of the Spirit "Butterknife " blade .

I am in a minority about the Spirit scissors , they do what I ask of them . That said , at work I always carry a pair of Klien Electrician's scissors . They get most of the dirty work like cable ties .

Chris

I think the Spirits scissors were an experiment for Victorinox, like the butterknife style blade, (i modded mine to a regular Vic spearpoint).
They finally decided to put the regular blade shape in the Spirit line, hopefully they will go the same way re scissors and eventually put the standard style in the Spirit model.
As far as i'm concerned Vic in general has the best scissors of all manufacturers bar none, that is on all their multis/SAK's EXCEPT for the Spirit.
The Spirits scissors are just ok, functional but no worse than many other multis scissors, mostly they need to open wider and maybe be a little longer.
In other words take the Vic scissors from the 111mm or 91mm SAK and shoehorn it into the Spirit.

Agreed 91mm scissors would be OK .I have a Butterknife and an X love them both , just depends on what else I'm packing on a given day . I do like the beefier spring on the Spirit , more length and gape would be OK too.

I'm thinking of getting a black oxide S model . I always have a Rambler on my keys and often have a pair of Kline Electricians scissors on my belt .

Just ordered the Spirit Plus with hatchet!
Asked for priority mail so it should be here in no more then 2 weeks (I hope).

And while I was at it, also made a donation to the Red Cross for Haiti. While I'm blowing away money on new toys people are dieing over there, so it was the least I could do .

I recently purchased a Vic Spirit S (the one with the regular spear point blade replacing the scissors). I've been carrying it each day on my belt, and though I've not yet had the opportunity to use it a lot, it's become my favorite MT. I also own an original Swisstool, and a whole lot of Leatherman tools over the years.

I absolutely love the ergos of the Spirit. Obviously, a lot of thought went into the design of this tool. Unlike my original Swisstool, the Spirit's tools aren't almost nail-breakers to pull out, and the curved handles help in that regard, as well as when using the pliers themselves. And though I like a lot of my Leathermans, to me the Spirit just feels 'right'. The size, the weight, the tools, and the F/F. If I had to hav only one MT to take with me, it would be the Spirit (and it is).

Scissors is a must for me, so my options were a bit limited. Still, there's PLENTY of good MTs with scissors out there.
Can't wait for my Spirit to arrive

I bought a spirit yesterday, Have not taken it through the paces, but plan to today or tomorrow. I got the plain blade version, no scissors. Not sure about the butterknife, is there a way to really sharpen it? Or is it best to just mod it into a plain blade?

The new leatherman wave has had all the tools I need and nothing I don't so far. I work in a factory with machinery and we often have tools missing while we have a tooling change and my wave has saved my butt several times when I was in a hurry and didn't have time to go find a proper tool. I added the pocket clip, and I found perfection in my eyes. I wear thick Kevlar gloves at work, and with the pocket clip, the one hand feature of the Wave is not only nice , but a necessary.

The Butterknife is very functional , sharpens easily on a Spyderco Sharpmaker . As do other serrated Vics.

Well.... ummm I haven''t found this to be the case, but then again, I suck at sharpening anything that is serrated.... so maybe I am just "serrated impaired".

I am another one who really likes the "butterknife" on the Spirit. Since I tend to carry one of many knives, 99% of the time I have a good locking blade to use. But there are times (like at work in the office area when using a Kershaw Mini Cyclone or a Buck 110 or something like that just doesn't sit well with folks, but using a MT, well no one bats an eye at it. But then again, no one really does a double take when I use one of my SAKs either.

The butterknife blade is my favorite for stripping shielding away from cabling.

All in all, for my work environment, I prefer the Spirit to most anything on the market, and if I had to choose "only one", the Spirit would be it (thank god I don't have to choose only one.....!). I love my Surge, my Core, My PST, My Juice, My Supertool, My SOG Powerlock. I kinda like some of the others I have, but for comfort, the Spirit wins everytime.

Still without my Spirit .
I bought it from gad-zooks on January 14th, and according to them, it was shipped promptly via USPS Priority Mail International, but so far nothing . I e-mailed them and they said they would send another one out ASAP, but that probably means another month of waiting.
Caspita :(.

Thanks for the tip!
I just tried to get a Wenger Ranger 58 from him but is e-commerce page is screwed up :(.

I was able to get in touch with Timothy and I have a Ranger 58 coming my way .

Well, got the Spirit last week and this afternoon I got the Wave .
I'm going to do a comparo on the duo in the next days and then I'll share what I think about the two.

I really can't stand the Swiss tools tool play. I find that the praised "Precision lock up" of the Swisstool to be extremely lacking. All the tools I found have a lot of up and down play, which that bothers me a lot. My Charge TTI still has some play, but far less than the Swisstool and most importantly doesn't have play on the main blades. I only held the surge and the TTI, but I suspect the Wave has the same tight tolerances as those two multi-tools.
